Crucuno Cromlech  Stone Circle  France  Bretagne:Morbihan (56)  Visited  19th Sep 2023  3  3    I struggle with the concept of rectangular "Stone Circles". Craddock Moor circle  Stone Circle  England  Cornwall  Visited  7th Jun 2023  2  4  3  Craddock Moor Stone Circle is not Stonehenge. Craddock Moor Cairn Cemetery  Barrow Cemetery  England  Cornwall  Visited  7th Jun 2023  3  4  3  The E tumulus, the best preserved of the pair, is visible WSW of Craddock Moor Stone Circle. Twelve men's moor cairn and cist  Cist  England  Cornwall  Visited  8th Jun 2023  3  4  3  There is something attractive about an intact cist exposed in a cairn. The isolated location of the cairn probably contributed to its survival.
Minions Mound  Round Barrow(s)  England  Cornwall  Visited  6th Jun 2023  2  3  4  The stone wall constructed round the mound may be protecting it for future antiquarians, however it also disguises the antiquity of the site.

It is erected at SX 24072 73838, c. 100 yards NW of a disused railway bed at the foot of Newell Tor. I walked SW from Kilmar Tor to access it. I would consider a GPS device essential to find this stone.

Callanish 6  Standing Stones  Scotland  Isle of Lewis  Visited  3rd Jul 2011  2  4  2  I wasn't convinced about the stone circle interpretation: stone circles are usually erected on flat ground. If it was a cairn where did all the stones go? The two standing stones are ill-matched. Callanish VI is a difficult site to interpret.
Callanish 5  Stone Row / Alignment  Scotland  Isle of Lewis  Visited  3rd Jul 2011  3  4  3  After a yomp over boggy moorland, it was somewhat underwhelming to find three short stones in a line. Maybe I have been spoilt by Cornish stone rows, up to half a mile long, but I struggled to appreciate the significance of Callenish V.
Callanish 4  Stone Circle  Scotland  Isle of Lewis  Visited  3rd Jul 2011  3  5  3  For some unknown reason I prefer the simplicity of a small stone circle round a cairn to the complex arrangement of stones at Callanish I. Additionally, there is a greater satisfaction in a solitary visit to Callanish IV.

Balker Moor S  Cairn  Scotland  Dumfries and Galloway  Visited  5th Nov 2022  2  4  3  The half mile trek to this cairn was waterlogged but I was compensated for my efforts by being 150 yards from a red deer stag and hinds (slightly nerve-wracking) and finding a cairn in moorland. It isn't the biggest cairn ever, but the overall experience was ultimately worthwhile.
Finnarts Hill  Standing Stones  Scotland  South Ayrshire  Visited  14th Jun 2019  3  4  2  These small stones are not spectacular however if you are visiting Finnarts Hill Cairn the extra half mile extension is worthwhile.

Hound Tor Enclosure  Causewayed Enclosure  England  Devon  Visited  12th Sep 2022  5  5  4  Hound Tor impressive outcrops form a natural enclosure. It is easy to see why ancient people would choose this elevated location as a defensive location.
Seven Lords' Lands  Stone Circle  England  Devon  Visited  12th Sep 2022  3  3  4  I love an unexpected cairn. On the way back from Hound Tor Medieval Village I noticed this cairn next to the road with a convenient car park. Bonus!

Bratton Camp  Hillfort  England  Wiltshire  Visited  18th Aug 2009  3    3  The interior of Bratton Camp is rather featureless and flat. I found Westbury White Horse more interesting.

Boskednan A  Cairn  England  Cornwall  Visited  15th Oct 2013  3  5  3  Boskednan A Kerbed Cairn is easily visited on the way to Nine Maidens of Boskednan. There are intermittent kerb stones round the cairn up to 4 feet tall. As a starter before the Nine Stones of Boskednan it is very satisfying.
Branhunisary  Standing Stone (Menhir)  Scotland  Isle of Islay  Visited  21st Aug 2019  3  4  3  If you are visiting Port Ellen and Branhunisary you may as well continue for c. 1 mile to the end of this narrow road at Kilbride farm which has a standing stone in an adjacent field.
Brane Entrance Grave  Chambered Tomb  England  Cornwall  Visited  21st Mar 2013  3    3  Brane Entrance Grave is a much reduced tomb but the reconstructed remains have an attractive aspect. It could be described as compact and bijoux!
Braidenoch Cross Slabs  Early Christian Sculptured Stone  Scotland  Dumfries and Galloway  Visited  17th Sep 2020  3    2  It is possible to visit Cairn Avel, a well preserved large cairn, if you go straight on at the point where Carnavel Farm paddock joins the path up the hill. Cairn Avel lies c. 300 yards E across boggy ground.

Bowerman's Nose  Rock Outcrop  England  Devon  Visited  21st Mar 2014  4  5  3  Bowerman's Nose is one of those splendid oddities which don't have an explanation. They are happy accidents. They don't need to be explained they just exist.
Home Covert Tumulus  Round Barrow(s)  England  Norfolk  Visited  28th Apr 2016  3  4  4  Home Covert Tumulus is easy to visit from a lay-by on the A1066. The tumulus is also known as Boudicca's Grave, one of several sites around Southern England claiming to be Boudicca's last resting place.
Boswens Menhir  Standing Stone (Menhir)  England  Cornwall  Visited  30th Apr 2017  4  4  3  I can never resist a standing stone on the horizon as I am driving. I will either investigate there and then or make a mental note to search for the stone later. In this case I was able to park up c. 500 yards NW of the stone at SW 3961 3310, adjacent to a track which led to Boswens Menhir. It is no...

Bosporthennis Quoit  Burial Chamber or Dolmen  England  Cornwall  Visited  15th Oct 2013  3  5  3  Bosporthennis Quoit is one of the more unusual quoits, sat on a small mound. There is a large open chamber on top of the mound. A capstone on the quoit has been carved into a millstone but left in situ.
Boslow Cross  Ancient Cross  England  Cornwall  Visited  14th Oct 2013  3  4  4  Boslow Cross has the appearance of a dressed stone rather than a standing stone. I would err on the side of it being a parish boundary stone rather than a prehistoric stone.
Boscawen-Ros East  Standing Stone (Menhir)  England  Cornwall  Visited  8th Feb 2019  3    4  Boscawen-Ros East is easily visited from the lay-by at Boskenna Cross. I followed the right of way path and found the large menhir in the middle of some cabbages. I skirted round the field to find the other menhir incorporated into the hedge at SW42782393. Dun Bornaskitaig  Broch or Nuraghe  Scotland  Isle of Skye  Visited  27th Jan 2012  2  4  3  The remains of the broch on Dun Bornaskitaig are mostly hidden under a grassy bank up to c. 4 feet high round the perimeter of the dun. There are several building constructed from the broch's stones in the vicinity of the dun.
Borve Stone Row  Stone Row / Alignment  Scotland  Isle of Skye  Visited  9th Aug 2011  3  4    There is a slight curve to the 3 stones in this row lending some weight to the argument that they were once part of a stone circle. The construction of a road through a stone circle could have occurred in the past.
Borve Standing Stones  Standing Stones  Scotland  Barra and Vatersay  Visited  28th Jun 2011  3  4  4  Borve Standing Stones are close to a beach track at the small community of Borve. Dun Bharpa is accessed via Borve, a worthwhile detour up to a large almost intact cairn.
Borgarvirki  Promontory Fort / Cliff Castle  Iceland    Visited  15th Nov 2015  3    4  I was fortunate to visit Borgarvirki Fort on the cusp of Winter, a fresh layer of snow adding atmosphere to an impressive site. Although my visit predated Game of Thrones it seems to me that Borgarvirki could easily have been transported from the icy wastes beyond The Wall.
Knocknocher stone pair  Standing Stones  Scotland  Dumfries and Galloway  Visited  15th Sep 2018  3  4  3  Knocknocher stone pair's proximity to White Cairn, Boreland may be significant. They are not in themselves impressive but they may have been waymarkers to the cairn. The stones are fenced off to protect them from cattle. Beef cattle are usually present in the field so caution should be exercised.
Spittal Croft cairn  Cairn  Scotland  Dumfries and Galloway  Visited  15th Sep 2018  2  3  4  It is easy to park at a road junction just beyond Spittal Croft Cairn. The low circle in the flat pasture is not spectacular but it was obviously more impressive before its near destruction. Sometimes it is better to to have a footprint of a cairn than an over-reconstructed monument.
Boreland  Chambered Cairn  Scotland  Dumfries and Galloway  Visited  19th Sep 2020  3  5  3  Boreland Cairn features on a path round Knockman Wood located to the N of Minigaff. Bombie 3  Rock Art  Scotland  Dumfries and Galloway  Visited  24th May 2021  3  5  3  Bombie 3 is easier to find than Bombie 2 due to its proximity to the pond fenced off in the NE corner of the field. Milton Hill  Standing Stones  Scotland  Dumfries and Galloway  Visited  7th Feb 2009  4  5  3  There is something magical about a perfectly matched pair of standing stones. The Blairbuy Stones are almost perfectly matched in shape and size. They could be the portal to another world.
Blairbuy 5  Rock Art  Scotland  Dumfries and Galloway  Visited  12th Nov 2011  3  5  3  Blairbuy 5 is a small deep-cut cup and ring marking on a rock ledge in whins c. 200 yards ESE from the summit cairn of Fell of Barhullion. (Canmore ID 62770)
Blairbuy 3  Rock Art  Scotland  Dumfries and Galloway  Visited  12th Nov 2011  3  5  3  Blairbuy 3 was hidden by whins however it was a large cup & 6 rings marking. It was less worn than the Rock Art lying prone in the fields probably due to it's sheltered location.
Blairbuy 2  Rock Art  Scotland  Dumfries and Galloway  Visited  27th Aug 2011  3  5  3  The cup and ring markings on the panel were faint but there were several large cup markings visible.
Blairbuy 1  Rock Art  Scotland  Dumfries and Galloway  Visited  27th Aug 2011  3  5  3  As far as I can remember Blairbuy 1 was easy to find and easier to photograph than most cup and ring markings.

Barclye Cairn  Cairn  Scotland  Dumfries and Galloway  Visited  11th Jul 2020  2  3    As with many cairns built in farmland the temptation to borrow the stones for a more practical purpose has proved too great so we are left with the footprint of the original cairn. Mynydd Cefn Amlwch  Chambered Tomb  Wales  Gwynedd  Visited  25th Aug 2014  3  4  4  Mynydd Cefn Amlwch is in a pastoral setting protected from livestock by a wooden fence. It is a classic tripod dolmen. I enjoyed the quiet ambience of the site.
Lligwy Burial Chamber  Chambered Tomb  Wales  Anglesey  Visited  28th Apr 2014  3    4  Lligwy Burial Chamber has one of the most impressive capstones in the British Isles. The cuboid shape is different from the slab like capstones found in Cornwall.
Arthur's Stone  Chambered Tomb  England  Herefordshire  Visited  25th Aug 2014  3  3  5  There is no logical reason that the amount of effort required to reach a site should affect your interpretation of the site. However I have found that I undervalue sites adjacent to the roadside in comparison with sites in the middle of nowhere. That said, the remains of Arthur's Stone are quite imp...

King Arthur's Bed  Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature  England  Cornwall  Visited  17th Mar 2014  4  5  3  King Arthur's Bed is located on the summit of Trewortha Tor, c. 1 mile W of the Twelve Men's Moor Car Park. If you stay on the ridge Hawk's Tor proposed mini Stone Row is c. 1 mile ENE from King Arthur's Bed.
Sheuchan's Cairn  Chambered Cairn  Scotland  Dumfries and Galloway  Visited  17th Sep 2020  3  4  1  I have visited Sheuchan's Cairn twice. The first visit was on 20.06.12. The cairn was hidden in forestry, difficult to find. The cairn was carpeted in moss with an excavated chamber in the centre. The surrounding trees elevated the atmosphere of site, isolating it from the outside world. The return ...

Doon Castle (Broch)  Broch or Nuraghe  Scotland  Dumfries and Galloway  Visited  12th Sep 2020  2  5  3  Doon Castle Broch is my favourite local site to visit. The name may be confusing to some people because there is a Doon Castle in Ayrshire on Loch Doon. Doon Castle Broch is on Ardwell Point in Dumfries and Galloway. A site of this quality deserves more visitors however the isolated location discou...

Ardvreck  Chambered Cairn  Scotland  Sutherland  Visited  28th Jul 2015  2  3  4  Ardvreck Chambered Cairn lies c. 250 yards NE of Ardvreck Castle. Therein lies the problem. Thousands of people walk past an anonymous grass mound transfixed by its more attractive companion. I myself was guilty of this on my first visit. It was only on my second visit to Ardvreck that I targeted th...

Ardvannie  Chambered Cairn  Scotland  Highlands  Visited  26th Apr 2012  3  4  4  Ardvannie Cairn is a forgotten cairn despite its proximity to the A836. I doubt many people visit and nature is slowly enveloping the remains.
Ardnave Loch  Crannog  Scotland  Isle of Islay  Visited  22nd Aug 2019  3  4  3  Unfortunately I visited Ardnave Loch during the rainy season (it runs from 1st January to 31st December) so the land around the loch was waterlogged. I would like to revisit in the dry season (if it exists).
St Nem's Churchyard (Kilnave)  Ancient Cross  Scotland  Isle of Islay  Visited  22nd Aug 2019  3  4  4  Kilnave Chapel was a bonus on my way to Ardnave Loch Crannog. I am not particularly attracted to graveyards however the unusual cross was worth the detour.
Ardestie  Souterrain (Fogou, Earth House)  Scotland  Angus  Visited  18th Nov 2019  3  3  4  Ardestie Souterrain is easy to visit but it is a little over-restored and airy for my taste. I prefer a more subterranean experience in keeping with the original site.
Ardilistry  Stone Circle  Scotland  Isle of Islay  Visited  22nd Aug 2019  3  5  3  Ardilistry Four Poster is in imminent danger of becoming Ardilistry Three Poster. The N stone was only protuding c. 1 inch above the surface on my visit. I wonder how much of Ardilistry Four Poster lies below the marsh? Going, going, gone: Don't leave it too long!
Arden Fort  Hillfort  Scotland  Dumfries and Galloway  Visited  17th Jan 2019  2  4  4  It takes some imagination to strip away the trees and whins however this small fort still retains a double rampart and ditch round a small enclosure. It is only 200 yards from a gateway c. 0.25 miles W of Twynholm.
Arbor Low 1  Stone Circle  England  Derbyshire  Visited  16th Apr 2009  3  5  4  Arbor Low Henge and Stone Circle are easy to find by following English Heritage signs off the A515 between Buxton and Ashbourne. Arbor Low Henge is well preserved but can be overshadowed by the circle of recumbent stones in the enclosure. There is some doubt as to whether the stones were ever stand...

Apron Full of Stones  Ring Cairn  England  Yorkshire (North)  Visited  6th Apr 2014  3  4  3  There is a convenient lay by c. 100ft WNW of Apron Full of Stones at SD7065578918. If Kingsdale Beck is in spate there is a bridge c. 200ft N of a lay-by at SD7023078010. The cairn is c. 0.5 mile walk by the river from this point. Apron Full of Stones is a much reduced cairn however there is suffi...

Andle Stone (Stanton Moor)  Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature  England  Derbyshire  Visited  22nd Jan 2009  3  4  3  The massive Andle Stone is impressive and the climb onto the top of the stone is challenging.
Suardal  Chambered Cairn  Scotland  Isle of Skye  Visited  11th Aug 2011  2  3  4  Suardal is an unspectacular cairn in a spectacular situation adjacent to the B8083 Elgol c. 2 miles out of Broadford. It's easy to visit in passing.
Althing  Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature  Iceland    Visited  11th Nov 2015  5  4  4  Thingvellir National Park features Almannagjá, a slowly widening chasm between the European and American plates and Lögrétta, the Law Rock that is said to be the first site of Althing, the oldest surviving parliament in the world. Althing was established c. 930 AD.
Altnacealgach  Chambered Cairn  Scotland  Highlands  Visited  31st Jul 2015  3  5  3  Altnacealgach Cairn is accessible from Altnacealgach Motel if you have walking boots or wellies as it situated on a rough moorland slope. The c. 0.5 mile return trip is more than compensated by a heather clad cairn with a 45 degree arc of exposed stones in the SE.
Allt nan Uamh Bone Caves  Cave or Rock Shelter  Scotland  Highlands  Visited  31st Jul 2015  4  5  3  The Bone Caves are set at the base of Creag nan Uamh in a spectacular highland glen. All of the discoveries have been removed to museums so it requires some imagination to reconstruct the caves as they were discovered. The impressive nature of the site more than makes up for this.
Longstone Cove  Standing Stones  England  Wiltshire  Visited  9th Feb 2011  3  5  4  The two remaining stones remind me how impressive the cove and avenue would have been before all the stones were moved. We can however be grateful that Adam and Eve have survived to tell the tale.
Achnancarranan  Stone Row / Alignment  Scotland  Isle of Islay  Visited  19th Aug 2019  3  5  3  Achnancarranan Stone Row is one of several sites on or near the track which lead N out of the track beside Lagavulin Car Park. Lagavulin, Druim Mor, Achnancarranan and Ballynaughton can all be accessed from this point for a c. 3 mile walk mostly on a farmtrack. I did encounter the problem of Beef Ca...

Achnabreck  Rock Art  Scotland  Argyll  Visited  30th Jan 2010  3  5  4  There are some sites which are overwhelming. There is too much to see on just one visit. The wealth of rock art on display at Achnabreck almost requires a revisit to appreciate how special it is.
Achmore  Stone Circle  Scotland  Isle of Lewis  Visited  2nd Jul 2011  2  4  3  Achmore Stone Circle resembles more a work in progress than a complete stone circle. It takes a leap of imagination to construct a megalithic site from multiple fallen stones.
Achavanich  Stone Circle  Scotland  Highlands  Visited  6th Jul 2011  3  5  4  Achavanich is one of the most impressive sites in Scotland. It's unique U-shape adds a layer of intrigue to an already brilliant site.
Achavanich  Stone Circle  Scotland  Highlands  Visited  6th Jul 2011  3  5  4  Achavanich is one of the most impressive sites in Scotland. It's unique U-shape adds a layer of intrigue to an already brilliant site.
Achara Standing Stone  Standing Stone (Menhir)  Scotland  Highlands  Visited  1st Dec 2013  5  5  3  Acharra Standing Stone stands in a field on the SW edge of Duror.
Kensalyre Stone  Standing Stone (Menhir)  Scotland  Isle of Skye  Visited  9th Aug 2011  3  4  4  There is a c. 3.5 foot stone in moorland around 50 feet SE of Kensaleyre Cairns, a pair of cairns on the E edge of the A87 to Portree. It seems probable that this stone had a relationship to the nearby cairns. It is listed under Canmore ID 11325 along with Kensaleye Cairns.
Stalldown Encircled Cairn  Cairn  England  Devon  Visited  1st Dec 2017  2  4  2  Stalldown Encircled Cairn is within 30 yards of Stalldown Stone Row on the Northern third of Stalldown Stone Row. Walk c. 100 yards NNW of Stalldown Cairn Circle to find the cairn.
Kirkmaiden Old Church  Ancient Cross  Scotland  Dumfries and Galloway  Visited  8th Sep 2019  2  4  4  St Medan Golf Club is one of the most scenic views in the South West. I have visited Kirkmaiden Church often before I read about the cross. There is a new combination padlock on the railed-off church so someone must have custodial access to the church.
Drummore Hillfort  Hillfort  Scotland  Dumfries and Galloway  Visited  17th Jan 2019  3  3  3  Drummore Castle is in a commanding defensive location with a view to the coast. The trees are blurring the edges of the double ditch and rampart defences. There is no evidence of occupation on the enclosure. The fort is 300m South of Drummore Stone Circle, up the slope and obscured by trees.
Caulside Burn Cairn North  Cairn  Scotland  Dumfries and Galloway  Visited  5th Nov 2018  2  4  3  This ruined cairn can be found by parking at Cambret Hill just above the cattle grid on the road to the Cambret Hill mast. Head downhill towards the summit of Cairnharrow opposite. Cauldside Cairn South, a large well preserved cairn will be visible half way up Cairnharrow across the valley. Cross th...

Caulside Burn Stone Setting  Stone Row / Alignment  Scotland  Dumfries and Galloway  Visited  5th Nov 2018      3  While visiting the Cauldside Burn Cairn North I looked for the two stones first using GPS, then by grid searching the area S of the cairn. This was difficult due to tussocks of heather and uneven ground. I found no substantial stones in a 30 yards by 30 yards area.
Machermore Cairns  Cairn  Scotland  Dumfries and Galloway  Visited  14th Oct 2018  4  5  4  The Machermore cairn should be called Culroy Cairn as it is on Culroy farmland. A Canmore search for Culroy will find these cairns. The cairn is almost perfectly preserved except for some exposed stones on the E flank. It's location in a flat field elevates this cairn into my top 10. I found the ...
