Somebody thought it was easier to vandalise a stone circle rather than alter the course of a field boundary. At least the Sherberton Stone Circle has survived in its somewhat ruined state.

Sherberton Stone Circle is approximately 30 metres in diameter with only 9 slabs still remaining in its northwest quadrant.

A field wall has been constructed through the southern part of the circle, and probably contains many of its original stones.

Update November 2019: For more information about this stone circle and its possible relationship to the Sherberton Stone Row, see the Stone Rows of Great Britain's entry for Sherberton Row, which explains: "The [Sherberton Stone] row is orientated north to south and points towards a stone circle a short distance away to the south on the other side of the hill. It is not known if the row ever reached the stone circle, but it seems likely". The SRoGB also includes a plan of the row and photographs of the stone circle.

This stone circle is also included on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entry for the Sherberton Stone Circle, which adds that this is: "(the) remains of a 97 ft diameter stone circle with a stone wall passing through its western side. Nine of the original stones are still standing, plus one larger stone which is incorporated in the remains of the old wall which bisects the western extremity of the circle. This stone appears to have been removed from the original circumference, and its height is 1.4m".

The circle is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 443298 and as MDV6290 (Sherberton Stone Circle) on the Devon and Dartmoor HER. The monument is also scheduled as Historic England List Entry No. 1002535 (Sherberton stone circle 315m SSE of Little Sherberton), which adds: "no stones remain standing to the west of this (field) boundary. Some of the stones were removed to be re-used as gate posts".

Sherberton circle
Sherberton circle submitted by caradoc68 : SX 639 731, Sherberton circle. The big rock in the foreground was probably not in the circle itself. This circle lays inside a farmers field with a stone wall run through the middle of the circle, with the east side of the circle completely missing. Work of the de-spoilers or farmers building walls ? hard to say. Look at the gate posts as you walk in to the field !!!! (Vote or comment on this photo)
