TheCaptain visited on 13th Sep 2023 - their rating: Cond: 5 Amb: 4 Access: 2 From circle 275 the stones of the Druids Circle can be seen up on the hill against the skyline. I make straight for it, but this is probably not the best way as it takes me through a little valley with lots of boggy area to get through. The site is positioned on a flattened platform area, with an embanked circle of stones about 35 metres diameter. Several of the stones are large and standing upright, many much smaller and some are flat to the ground. The position up here is gorgeous with the views out and over the sea with the Great Orme to the east, and Anglesey to the west. There are a couple here taking it all in, with the lady sat sketching the circle. I was intending having my lunch here, but I move on to the next site for that, so we do not disturb each other.

Druids Circle (Penmaenmawr) submitted by nigeynoo : The magical Druids Circle taken at night with the Milky Way, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter (Vote or comment on this photo)
This fantastic ring of around 30 stones stands on the headland of Penmaenmawr above Conwy, close to a prehistoric trackway and three other stone circles. It has a portalled entrance consisting of 4 stones and according to Burl may have been raised as early as 3000BC.

New aerial photos and drone video of this amazing circle and lots more below.

    Hi Anonymous,

Back in 2005 when I visited this lovely circle I had printed off a few copies of Streetmap (from the 'External Link' lime-green icon at the top of the site page), at scale 1:25000. This version shows Mountain Road, leading SE up out of the town, and in my memory it terminates for traffic at the Jubilee Pillars, a memorial of two round gateway pillars, where I pulled in and parked. Using the maps you have printed out* the green footpaths to the site are clearly marked. Druids Circle is highlighted with an arrow. *(You'll need to shift up with the arrow at top of map to get the edge of town, then down to get the area of the footpaths you need to print out.) You pass other stones and smaller monuments on the way, and like the other post said, it is a bit steep going up but easy coming down, and well-worth it.
    Good luck.
(If I remember correctly, Mountain Road was a bit narrow, too, but if I can do it, anyone can!)
The map showing the town also helps you to navigate through Penmaenmawr after coming off the A55.

    Hi Anonymous,

I have just Googled for info on the best way to get to the Druids Circle and found this useful leaflet online:

    https://www.conwy.gov.uk/en/Resident/Leisure-sport-and-health/Coast-and-Countryside/Assets/documents/Penmaenmawr-Upland-walk.pdf

I see they are not advising driving up Mountain Lane. Maybe it isn't open to traffic now? 2005 was a long time ago!

I went here a few years back. The nearest place to park is at the top of Mountain Lane, Penmaenmawr (check the Bing Map link on the Map Ref above). Then it's a steepish climb to the top (but downhill all the way back). After our visit we were lucky to be followed, at a distance, by a beautiful white mare with her young foal.

A reader's comment under an online photo of lenticular clouds over Cape Town mentioned the frequent occurrence of these clouds over the North Wales coast, and made me wonder if the ancient people who built their circles high above those cliffs (the Druids Circle, Penmaenmawr comes to mind), did so in awe of them?
http://www.gohowie.com/php_photos/cloud-lenticular-02.php
This link shows an example.
Perhaps the ancients thought they were some kind of message from their gods?

what an amazing place with stoneage axe factory nearby then tying up with the bronzeage with copper mine on orme they were certainly busy dragging us through one age to the next. any one having campfires in the circle area should be sacrificed.

I was camping up near druids circle and witnessed a perfect arc of energy, that i cannot explain, but what resembled a rainbow in the night sky. The light was more erie and ethral than that of a rainbow, and a friend witnessed it too. Does anyone have an idea of what this could have been?
