markj99 visited on 19th Aug 2019 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 5 Access: 3 Achnancarranan Stone Row is one of several sites on or near the track which lead N out of the track beside Lagavulin Car Park. Lagavulin, Druim Mor, Achnancarranan and Ballynaughton can all be accessed from this point for a c. 3 mile walk mostly on a farmtrack. I did encounter the problem of Beef Cattle occupying Lagavulin Stone and the track through the field.

SandyG visited on 19th Aug 2017 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 A visit to this row can be combined with a trip around the Lagavulin Distillery. Parking is available at NR 40348 45757. From here follow the track north and then west to NR 39370 46232. Turn left and follow the track to stone row. Other standing stones can be visited enroute.

Achnancarranan
Achnancarranan submitted by SandyG : View from the south west (Scale 1m). Views to the north are restricted by rocky outcrops. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A single stone row on the Isle of Islay. It measures 7.5m long, including three large orthostats situated on a south facing terrace with restricted views of the nearby sea. The northern stone measures up to 2.6m high, whilst the southern one is 2.87m tall. The central stone is now recumbent and probably fell eastward. The row is orientated north to south and stands in an area with broadly contemporary standing stones and a chambered tomb.

This alignment of three stones is featured on the Stone Rows of Great Britain website - see their entry for the Achnancarranan Stone Row, which includes a description, photographs and a plan of the row. See also the SRoGB's entry for Sea Views at Achnancarranan, which discusses and illustrates the sea views which are visible from this row. More information is recorded as Canmore site no. 37581.

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also features a page on this site - see their page for Achnancarranan, Islay, Argyll, which includes directions for finding these stones together with a brief archaeology & history.

Note: There are lots of other sites to explore on Islay, see our nearby sites list
