Devil's Quoit (Stackpole) submitted by Horatio : Access is easy to find if approaching from Stackpole warren, after entering the double gate enclosure from the woods, before leaving through the second gate in front of you. look right and you'll see a side gate that leads to the stone. Standing stone 1.7m tall in the Stackpole Warren nature reserve. Lots of other interesting stones and settlements around here. It is thought to stand on the site of a circular timber structure that burnt down around 1395 BC. Though it now stands alone, the stone probably formed part of an arrangement of smaller stones. About 940 BC a cremation burial was added to the earlier monument. The site was reused in the Iron Age and Romano-British period.

Devil's Quoit (Stackpole)
Devil's Quoit (Stackpole) submitted by Horatio : Something a little different... The stone is 1.7m tall, 1.5m wide, and 0.4m thick, in the shape of a rounded rectangle with a distinct step, or shoulder on one side. It is thought to stand on the site of a circular timber structure that burnt down around 1395 BC. Devil's Quoit (Stackpole) submitted by Swimpembrokeshire : I pass it all the time when out walking but this time wondered if the curious shape and purposeful alignment meant anything. It aligns perfectly on a north-south axis, with the northern corner of the massive rectangular slab gently sloping downwards. (1 comment)

Devil's Quoit (Stackpole) submitted by PERKYPUFFIN : Note this is the Devil's Quoit Stackpole (There is another standing stone with the same name 2km away near Bosherston.) This one has a cut out at table height which makes me think it was used like a slaughter stone to eviscerate deer before transporting home. The orientation is North / South of the edges. The largest side faces due West. A very large limestone stone obviously chosen a...

my contribution just sent said their are two Devils Quoit, one called Stackpole and the other Bosherston. I should have called the second one Devils Quoit St Twynells (not Bosherston)

As this one is nearest to Stackpole Warren is maybe clearer to call this one Devil's Quoit (Stackpole Warren)

Coflein site entry.

http://www.coflein.gov.uk/en/site/305411/details/DEVIL%27S+QUOIT%2C+STACKPOLE+ELIDOR/

A standing stone, 1.7m high by 1.5m by 0.4m, reset in 1978 in the course of excavations about its site: the stone was shown to have been erected on the site of a circular structure that burnt down about 1395 BC and was part of a complex setting of small stones; a cremation was inserted into this complex about 940 BC: a later Iron Age and Romano-British settlement, or ritual, non-settlement site was also encountered & recorded.
