Croft Moraig
Croft Moraig submitted by childrenofthestones : Overhead shot showing concentric construction July 2023. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A stone circle in Perthshire with two outlying stones to the north-north-east. There is a good information board here outlining the history of the site, which has three distinct phases. Initially fourteen wooden posts were erected in a horseshoe shape approximately 8m x 7m, open to the SSW. These were later replaced by eight stones between 0.8m and 1.4m high. This recently captured overhead shot shows the concentric construction.

A bank encloses the stones. On this bank, to the SSW, lies a 2m long stone with over twenty cupmarks on it. This stone is aligned with the southern moonset. Finally, a 12m diameter circle of twelve stones, all about 1.7m high, was erected around the horseshoe. To the ESE 5.5m outside the circle, two stones stand 2.5m apart making an entrance. The northern stone is apparently aligned with the equinoctial sunrise.

Canmore site no. 24891.

From Aberfeldy take the A827 west towards Kenmore. About 6 kilometres along this road on the left (south side) is a small road leading to Tullichuil farm. Park carefully at this entrance, and there is a gate leading in to the field on the west side of the road. The circle is plainly visible from here. Ensure the gate is shut properly as there are often sheep in the field.

Croft Moraig is also featured on The Northern Antiquarian - see their page for Croft Moraig, Kenmore, Perthshire. They give a 10 digit grid reference of NN 79750 47262, and the page contains an early drawing of the stone circle, an 1867 OS map, a plan and photographs.

Canmore describe this as a "complex stone circle" and "the most complete stone circle of its type in Scotland."

Sample excavation at Croftmoraig stone circle, 2012, Richard Bradley by Andy B on Sunday, 14 August 2016
(User Info | Send a Message)
The aims of the 2012 excavation

1.To collect sample of micro-charcoal from stratified deposits that were not completely excavated in 1965.
2.To shed light on the procedures followed in the 1965 excavation so that
the published and archive record could be interpreted with more confidence
3.To resolve a few problems of interpretation suggested by a study of the
site photographs.

New research at Croftmoraig suggests a complex sequence of events on the site. The first was the recognition that quite by chance the midsummer sunset could be observed behind Schiehallion from a striking orange rock on top of a natural mound
