Tregiffian Barrow
Tregiffian Barrow submitted by Richard13 : Tregiffian Barrow, showing the cup marked stone, and the proximity of the road! (Vote or comment on this photo)
A Neolithic or early Bronze Age chambered tomb by the side of a country road near to the Merry Maidens, which has a stone near the entrance decorated with numerous cup marks. This circular barrow, located just down the road from the Merry Maidens consists of a burial chamber composed of stone uprights, dry stone walling and 4 capstones. The northern half has been obliterated by the modern road.

One of the wallstones is decorated with cupmarks, although a replica now stands in its place as the original was taken some years ago to the Cornwall Museum in Truro to protect it against weathering etc.

(This site is managed by the Cornwall Heritage Trust.) Located 2 miles southeast of St Buryan on the B3315. There is a small parking area next to the nearby Merry Maidens stone circle.

Note: The Tregiffian project picks up work on an unpublished excavation, including photogrammetry of the rock art, more in the comments on our page

The Tregiffian project - more work on an unpublished excavation by Andy B on Saturday, 01 October 2022
(User Info | Send a Message)
The Tregiffian project is the analysis and dating of the archive from unpublished excavations at an entrance grave at Tregiffian in Penwith, Cornwall. The project involves
analysis and publication of the very significant findings from the site and aims to establish a thorough chronological basis for the use of the entrance grave for burial, as well as
analysing the burials and ceramics from the site and detailed photogrammetry of the stones.

The excavations at Tregiffian were undertaken by Dorothy Dudley in 1967–8 and subsequently by Arthur ApSimon in 1972–3. These seasons of excavation revealed that, unlike all other megalithic tombs of this form, Tregiffian had a complex history which included the deposition of cremated human remains in the chamber and within three pits, one of which contained a ceramic vessel and another sherds, and alterations of the kerb which may have been intended to block further access to the site. Uniquely for a Cornish entrance grave, the excavations also revealed evidence for the incorporation of rock art on several stones within the monument.

Andy, when there recently I saw that large pits in the stone (that I believe is a replica?) were called cup marks. I have never seen cup marks this large.
Are they sure these were human-made?

Notes from a visit Sept 2013

From Gun-Rith we walk along the western side of the field to the gate in the corner, which is much easier than crossing the field, just one more site to visit on the way back to the car which is Tregiffian Barrow. Dad seems almost incredulous at the amount of different sites and types there are to be found here, with a comment along the lines of “I never knew there was so much to be seen here, its amazing”.

The barrow is looking good today and has a little signpost with some explanation. I point out the carved stone (replacement) at the entrance, and that the road has cut through the back of it, but thankfully they left the curve of the road around it when they were going to straighten it in the 1960’s.

Today it seems to be more like a Breton allée couverte than a typical Cornish burial chamber, and perhaps that says something about it’s builders. There is a lovely vivid Red Admiral spreading its wings just inside the entrance, and taking a photo of this with a running out battery makes me forget to have a proper look inside what is left of the chamber.

So that’s it for this little stonehunting exercise, Dad seems well impressed by all the sites to be seen round here, and it’s also lovely for me to see them again on a nice sunny afternoon. I want to call in to the Marry Maidens again on the way back to the car, walking through their field rather than along the road, but Dad reminds me of the jammed upper gate and says he isn’t going to climb that again, and similarly I am not going to let him walk up alongside the busy road, picking at all the blackberries etc on his own, so it’s up the road and back to the car, also having a look over the hedge into the garden of the dwelling there. Intriguing. Is it just a caravan with a large elaborate garden?
