Stall Moor circle
Stall Moor circle submitted by thecaptain : Kiss-in-the-Ring stone circle. Seen here looking to the south, from the end of the longest known prehistoric stone row in the World. The most magnificent Dartmoor stone row can be seen from here (in reality, if not this picture), running over the top of Stalldown Barrow hill in the distance of this picture. At the southern end of the longest ancient stone row in Britain, and possibly the world, can be found the Kiss-in-the-Ring stone circle, miles away from any modern habitation, and a long desolate walk from anywhere.

What a lovely stone circle this is, at the southern end of the longest ancient stone row known. Strangely, the tallest stone, 1.5 metres high, is not at the end of the row, although it looks like there may have been a tall stone here which is now fallen.

The diameter of the circle is 16 to 17 metres, and most of the stones are less than a metre tall. Several bits of stone are to be seen in the central area of the circle, but no particular structures or patterns can be made out.

The stones are not evenly spaced, and there are many more of them on the western side than the eastern side, but it is thought that the stones are all here, with little alteration having taken place over the millennia.

Update September 2019: This cairn circle is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entries for the Erme Cairn Circle and the Upper Erme Row & Cairn Circle.

This monument is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 442445 and on the Devon and Dartmoor HER; see MDV4310 (Stall Moor Stone Circle).

The circle is also scheduled as part of Historic England List ID 1003287 (Stall Moor circle and long stone row).

A very interesting stone circle in an appropriate setting indeed! I missed it when I was in the area in 1981 (1) However, I wonder why it would be significantly older than some of its counterparts both in Britain and in France. Do you have any information to enlighten me on the subject? Thank you.

During a weekend backpacking on southern Dartmoor, we camped down by the river Erme nearby for the evening, and while dinner was being prepared, I came for an exploration of the circle. It’s a pity the grass was all so long, well above knee height, and the stones are all too overgrown, but it’s lovely nevertheless.

This is a real, proper job of a circle, with countless stones! I counted 22 stones first time (clockwise) and then 24 going anticlockwise. With a bit of delving into the long grass, I got to 26 stones on my third count, again going clockwise.

I spent quite some time here during the evening, while camping nearby, hoping for a gap in the clouds to give some sunlight for taking photographs, but without luck as it only got darker and more overcast. But while spending this time here, I started to feel a magic about the place. It was extremely tempting to go to the camp down by the river, and move my tent up here to spend the night inside the middle of the circle.

The next morning came back, this time in lovely sunshine. I counted the stones again, and this time got to 25, while my friend counted 23. This just goes to prove that it is impossible to count them accurately.

The views south over the Erme valley are lovely, and the four large stones at the northern end of Stalldon stone row can clearly be seen on top of their hill on the skyline. To the north, the stone row can be seen marching over the moorlands to the horizon.

Fantastic. Now one of my favourite ancient places.
