Upper Erme Cairns
Upper Erme Cairns submitted by StoneLee : Another favourite place, need to go back soon. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Considering all the number of ancient settlements and other signs of habitation in the Erme valley, there are relatively few cairns and other burial monuments to be found. For the entire 3.3 km length of the Upper Erme stone row, just four cairns, three of which are small and inconspicuous, are seemingly related to it, unlike the other great rows of the southern moor, which all have many cairns situated near to them.

Cairn 2 is a large cairn just upslope from the stone row about half a kilometre from the southern end. It is about 15 metres in diameter, and still well over a metre high, but has been much modified and made into a shelter. In the centre is a pit, possibly the remains of a burial cist, possibly more modern alterations for a fireplace.

Superb views all around over the Erme valley, with the Erme Plains and Erme Pound settlements clearly visible on the opposite side of the river. Stalldon stone row is visible on the hilltop to the south, looking like a group of walkers marching over the hilltop.

Update December 2019: This cairn is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entry for the Upper Erme Cairn. The cairn is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 442159 and as MDV4366 (Cairn adjacent to the Stall Moor stone row). For more information about the Stalldown stone row, see the Stone Rows of Great Britain's entry for Stalldown, which includes a plan of the row and its associated cairns.

Upper Erme Cairns submitted by SandyG : The cairn is adjacent to the Upper Erme stone row. Despite proximity they are unlikely to have been built at the same time. The row is likely to be earlier.
