SandyG visited on 19th Oct 2014 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 5 Access: 4 Car parking is available at SX 55313 75017 or SX 56050 74895. The row is a relatively short walk away from either car park. It is worth having a look at the stone circle a short distance to the north of the row. The row is easiest found by walking towards the large standing stone situated close by.

Merrivale row 4
Merrivale row 4 submitted by Brian Byng : Row 4 azimuth 6 length 7m GR 5535 7458 Burl calls this E A short row of 4 small stones next to the single standing stone. It shows up rather well in this winter photo taken a few days ago. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Merrivale single stone row 4, part of the Merrivale complex on western Dartmoor in Devon. A short row of 4 small stones next to the large standing stone. Although close to the menhir the row is clearly not aligned on it.

This short stone alignment is recorded as part of Pastscape Monument No. 440047, as MDC53397 (Short stone row south of standing stone, Merrivale) on the Devon and Dartmoor HER, and scheduled as part of Historic England List ID 1013430.

The row also features as part of Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) - see their entries for the Merrivale Menhir 1 and the Merrivale Ceremonial Complex [Photo Set 1].

The Stone Rows of Great Britain also includes an entry for this alignment - see their page for Merrivale 4, which includes a description, plans of the Merrivale monuments showing their relationships to each other, and a plan of row 4, showing its proximity to the standing stone, kerbed cairn and Merrivale Rows 5 and 6.

Butler in his “Dartmoor Atlas of Antiquities”, volume 3, page 28, says: “Stone row 4 is now a trivial affair of 3 small slabs aligned towards a squarish block near the base of the standing stone. The area has suffered some considerable damage over the past century. There were five stones in 1895, the missing one presumably accounted for by the pit which has appeared between the upper stones. This may well be the site of the cairn, C4, at the head of the rows recorded by Rowe by not included in the plans of Lukis or Worth …. The Exploration Committee excavated both ends of the row but not more socket holes were found and they concluded that this short alignment was complete”.
