We parked in the small car park at SX 55311 75018 and, having introduced ourselves to the rest of Sandy's small Expeditionary Force, we walked the short distance onto the moor to start at this site. With the nearer stone rows within site just at the top of the hill, expectations for an exciting rest of the day rose rapidly.
The only downside was the absolutely howling wind that blew throughout the day, sometimes makingit difficult to stand upright. However, it was a cheap way of exfoliating!
I found out when copying photos from the memory card of my camera to my computer that the external GPS device on my camera had stopped working, so I was unable to identify the precise locations of the hut circles I photographed.

This site is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 440079 and scheduled as part of both Historic England List ID 1013427 (A partially enclosed stone hut circle settlement, round cairn, post medieval farmstead, millstone and stone cutting pits 580m ESE of Merrivale Bridge) and Historic England List Entry No. 1013428 (A stone hut circle 650m east of Merrivale Bridge forming part of a partially enclosed stone hut circle settlement).
Pastscape tells us that the area includes at least 36 hut circles and four enclosures. "The structures on the site are thought to have been constructed during the Bronze Age, over a long period from around 2500 BC to 1000 BC. They lie on both sides of the B3357 some 500 metres east of Merrivale Bridge".
Some of the hut circles nearest the road have been robbed for stone; others have been mutilated by modern trenches. Pastscape adds: "Sixteen have visible doorways, four lie within or are attached to enclosures and one has a porch. A string of six huts in the southern part of the settlement may once have been linked". The Pastscape record gives the grid references of structures within the settlement, together with brief identification (such as 'adjoins enclosure', 'bisected by road', etc).
More information for visitors can be found at English Heritage - Merrival Prehistoric Settlement, which adds: "a settlement site and ritual complex lie side by side, is one of the finest on the moor. It is also one of the most accessible, being close to a road".
Update November 2019: This settlement is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entries for the Merrivale Settlement and the Merrivale Ceremonial Complex [Photo Set 2]. The site is also included as MDV4897 (Merrivale Hut Circle Settlement) on the Devon and Dartmoor HER.
