This was once a large cairn with diameter about 20 metres and a retaining kerb, but most of the stones were removed to repair the road in 1851. What is now left is a circle of uneven ground with a few stone slabs in an outer bank. Remains of an inner ring and pit can be seen.
Update November 2019: This cairn is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entry for the Merrivale Embanked Cairn Circle and Cist, which tells us: "The excavation of 1851 seems to have been thorough, completely destroying structural remains of both the cairn and the 'cist or inner circle'. There is now a circular turf covered area, 18.0m. in diameter, with random stones protruding through the surface. Off centre there is a hollow, 7.0m. by 4.0m. and 0.5m. deep".
The cairn is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 440041, as MDV4997 (Remains of a ring cairn, Merrivale) on the Devon and Dartmoor HER, and scheduled as part of Historic England List Entry No. 1013429 (Three stone alignments, ten cairns, three stone hut circles and a length of the Great Western Reave on Longash Common).
