Fascinating. Worried about the complexity of recording all these sites in my photo/walk journal, Angie Lake told me about the Butler "Atlas of Antiquities" series of 5 books, which has hugely increased my understanding of these sites. Thanks, Angie!

Cairn circle with central cist, part of the Merrivale complex on western Dartmoor, in Devon

Cairn with surrounding stone circle and central cist, positioned in the middle of the Merrivale Central double stone row. The diameter of the stone circle is about 4 metres.

For more information, the cairn and cist is recorded as part of the entry for Pastscape Monument No. 44056, which says: "The central cairn, at SX 55437477, is 3.0m. in diameter and 0.2m. high, with its stone content now turf covered. It has an off-centre cist, orientated north-south, of which the side slabs remain in place. The cist measures 0.7m. by 0.4m. and is 0.3m. deep. Slightly beyond the perimeter of the mound six stones of a peristalith or cairn circle survive, two to a height of 0.5m".

The cairn is also recorded in Butler, Volume 3, pages 26 & 27, figure 44.7.3: "Uniquely, a small cairn, C2 (3.5 x 0.3m) interrupts the rows about midway, three metres nearer the east end, separating them into two almost equal halves. Five stones of an outer ring surround its base and a central pit reveal two sides of a cist. This was excavated by the Rev. Bray in 1802 who 'dug to the depth of three fee; and discovering nothing thought it useless to dig further' … the cairn seems to have been built before one half of the alignment at least as they do not correspond exactly across it, and dimensions differ on either side".

Update November 2019: This cairn is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entries for the Merrivale double row B (centre) Encircled Cairn and Cist and the Merrivale Complex.

The cairn is also recorded as MDV14796 (Cairn with cist in middle of stone row, Merrivale) in the Devon and Dartmoor HER, and scheduled as part of Historic England List ID 1013429 (Three stone alignments, ten cairns, three stone hut circles and a length of the Great Western Reave on Longash Common).
