Megalithic Portal Summer 2005 Prize Photo Competition Open

As described in Thorgrim's recent article, the Megalithic Portal attracts some top amateur photographers, and those of us behind the scenes like to show our appreciation, as do other visitors. So we have decided to hold a Summer photo competition as we did in 2003. There are two entry categories, with five possible prizes as follows

* A * Best Photo with a Summer Solstice theme (doesn't have to be Stonehenge or taken at the Solstice)
* B * Best Photo with a Prehistory Theme Not just megaliths, anything with a connection to the theme. (pre Roman or pre-Columbian).
* Best Overall Photo

Each Category has a first and second prize of £25 of books or other items from our online shop (subject to availability), together with an extra prize of £25 of items for the overall winner. You can top up the prize towards a more expensive item like a ring if you like. Not in the shop, but as an alternative we have two brand new copies of Julian Cope's Megalithic European worth £35 each (first come first served)

Rules:

* One photo entry per person per category, open to all registered users.
* Photos do not have to be new, but must not be displayed on other web sites other than your own personal web pages.
* Photos must be saved as .JPG. Size between 640x480 and 750x500 pixels (or near equivalent), and less than 200kB file size. See our FAQ for more help on this.
* No photo editing, cheesy filters or other editing trickery. Simple things like cropping and brightness/gamma adjustment are encouraged but tweaking other parameters will be frowned upon, including upping the colour saturation for dramatic effect - we can spot this!
* You must be the copyright holder. You retain copyright in your photo, but agree for it to be displayed on the Megalithic Portal and to be used in ways connected with the competition.
* The decision of the judges is final in all matters and no correspondence will be entered into.
* Please be aware of the Terms and Conditions of use of this web site, which are linked from every page. By interacting in the competition or in other ways on this site you are agreeing to abide by these terms.
* You can nominate your own photos for the competition that you've recently submitted to the Portal, leave a comment and we'll enter it into the competition.
* Closing date for entries: 24th July 2005. Closing date for Voting: 31st July 2005. The winners will be announced shortly after this date

How to submit a photo:

1. Go to http://www.megalithic.co.uk (that's an easy one!)
2. Log in with your user name and password, or Register for a free account if you don't already have one. (Contact me on the link to the left if you don't get a password through and I'll sort it out for you.)
3. Click here to Submit your Photo Entries (will open in a new Window).
4. Go right to the bottom of the drop-down-list in 'Select Category' and choose 2005 Summer Photo Competition (it's near the bottom in the category list)
5. Click on Browse, and select the photo from your hard disk to upload.
6. Enter a photo Title and caption. If you are submitting a photo of an ancient site, please include in the text the name of the site, preferably using the name we list it under. Also include in the text which category you are entering -
* A * Summer Solstice Photo Competition
* B * Prehistory Photo Competition
7. Click upload and then WAIT for about 10 seconds while your photo is uploaded.
8. That's it! We will check and post your photo soon

Voting:

+ Do not vote for yourself
+ Only vote once for each photo.
+ Don't cheat and vote more than once for each photo. All votes are logged and any unusual voting patterns will mean your photo entry will be disqualified.
+ When you vote, you can rate each photo from 1 to 10. Higher scores will get more points when the winners are totted up.
+ Feel free to leave comments on the photos too, but these will not count in the official voting.
+ The sooner you get your photo uploaded the more chance you have to accumulate a good voting score but we will run the voting for a good while so it's fair to all

Prize Conditions:

- Non-UK winners will have to choose paperbacks or CD-ROMs or pay for the postage as it is flippin' expensive for heavy ones! (Sorry)
