Avebury - The Cove submitted by Nasher : OVERALL 1st PRIZE WINNER! This is Leah's (Creator's niece) submission for * A * Summer Solstice Photo Competition. (Vote or comment on this photo)
We are delighted to announce the winners of our recent photo competition. As you saw, the entries were of a very high standard, many thanks to everyone who took part, whether with a photo or just a vote or encouraging comment. The 1st and 2nd in each category have both won £25 to spend in our online shop, or a copy of The Megalithic European*. Without any further waffle, here are the winners:

thanks every one,
i was so happy when i found out as i have only been doing photography for under a year but i have really found my pastion (not shure how to spell that). I really think you have got a picture to be proud of there jimit and i was also in the right place at the right time! a winter solstice competition would be nice to see.
A big thank you to the judjes, the people who took part and every one else who helped along the way.

I really want to run a Winter Solstice competition next. Get you out of a nice warm bed on a freezing frosty morning - just a sadist at heart. But the Winter Solstice is the really important one - Death of the old year and birth of the new - dying, sinking sun begins its long climb back into the sky and the days slowly lengthen - magic! Winter fire festivals abound in various places "oop north" and the oak king gives way to the holly king (or is it t'other way around?) Lots of scope for great winter shots - more news later.

Astonishing was the right word, Thorgrim, for the whole competition. We had a nail biting time of it this end once you posted your amazing picture, Jimit, this last weekend Nasher was away and it was down to me to text her the ongoing agony. It was clear that Nasher was going to get 1st or 2nd place in class, but I reckoned overall was a tough one as Anna's Castlerigg picture was also supurb. Ken's picture was also very good though I tended to agree with Angie about the lighting.

So a great competition and my thanks also to Andy and Thorgrim and anyone else lurking in Portal world for putting this on and congratulations to all the winners and I am looking forward to next year.

And, of course, a last word for Nasher, YOU DID IT! Well done!

Congratulations Nasher, it was a close run thing between us ;) I don't know about you but I was at the right place at the right time An element of luck is always useful.

Very well deserved double win. An astonishing picture of great style and depth. The more you look into it the more you find. I couldn't fault it at all - perfect. Congratulations Nasher!

We have many truly excellent photos of Castlerigg, but Anna's prize winning picture is a real gem. Lovely evocative photograph and we look forward to seeing more from you.

Very fine work from the runners up too. The standard of entries this year was very high indeed, but I forecast that next year it will be even higher and today's top entrants will have to defend their laurels tomorrow. We can all learn from each other and so improve our photography. It is continual striving for improvement that leads to excellence and the coveted FRPS.

Watch out for the first in a series of articles on aspects of better megalithic photography - coming to the Portal soon!
