Announcing the Megalithic Portal photo competition winners for Oct to Dec 2020

Continuing the catch-up of our photo competitions, we are delighted to announce the winners for photos submitted to us between October and December 2020. As always these were all voted for by you, our visitors and contributors. Votes are still being collected for all photos submitted since then and we will be announcing more winners soon.

1st Prize: The Rollright Stones by David Smyth (Energyman)

This atmospheric photo shows off this beautiful circle in a new way, with the elongated shadows not only showing the varying heights of the stones, but also emphasising their wonderfully ‘crenulated’ tops.

2nd Prize: Nottingham Hill. Photo taken by Cate Davies and sent in by RyNorfolk

Another atmospheric image which attracted many comments, and was awarded ‘Spirit of Place’ status, the Portal’s special Gallery for outstanding photos (worth following the link to see these!).

3rd Prize: Moel Ty Uchaf by DJMace

This photo clearly captured Portal members’ attention, receiving the highest number of hits of all the quarter’s images. As DJMace said at the time, it really shows the “cairn circle in a spectacular location and well worth the hike.”

Highly Commended: Mitchell's Fold. Submitted by RichFox

This really captures the reaction of RichFox’s daughter on her first visit to Mitchell’s Fold and her delight in experiencing the ‘Magic of the Stones’!

Highly Commended: Drombeg Stone Circle by Orcinus

A simply delightful-looking circle, in an attractive setting, makes you want to visit!

Highly Commended: Zislow Schaelchenstein by SolarMegalith

The timing of this photo captures the sun’s angle perfectly to show off the cupmarks at their best, almost 3D!

A special mention for this image - very striking in its colours and composition, but it is actually a painting by J. T. Lundbye 1839, Torvaldsens Museum, Copenhagen. More than one Portal member initially thought it was one of Tonnox’s great site photos!

There is still time to vote in the next photo competition. You can browse and choose photos to vote for in our Photo Gallery. See the drop down box near the top to select photos from recent months, then click "Update". You are very welcome to browse back further to previous years and vote on any photos you like at any time. We will be announcing the results of the next competitions soon.

Please do vote and comment on any photos that particularly catch your eye. You can score photos for visual or archaeological merit or for any other reason you like. A vote from any person will start off the scoring. You are allowed to vote for each of your own photos once if you would like to put them forward. Equally you do not have to have your photos rated or voted on if you don't want to. Please contact Andy B via the 'Contact Editor' link if you do not want to take part.
