Long Stone, Staunton

Long Stone, Staunton submitted by Humbucker on 26th Nov 2017. The Staunton Longstone. Took me a couple of attempts to find this stone as there are two Stauntons in the same county! The 'other' Staunton is a little further north.

Cold Aston

Cold Aston submitted by Humbucker on 7th Dec 2017. Its easy to drive past this barrow - there's no sign although its on a pathway, but you can just see it from the road if you look. I first visited in the summer after an afternoon of rain & got absolutely drenched in the long grass. You can make out the shape of the barrow better without the leaves on the trees, I think at least one end of the barrow has suffered with past ploughing. It's a lovely site to visit & I've not seen anyone else here the times I've visited!

Hellstone

Hellstone submitted by Humbucker on 13th Dec 2017. Visited The Hellstone in the Spring. I parked halfway down Portisham Hill -where there is a little pull in layby. Some farmhands were moving soil with a tractor & trailer & I asked one of them if I was heading in the right direction for The Hellstone. He genuinely didn't know what I was talking about - I had a feeling it would be up on the ridge above the field so I asked if it was OK to climb up & walk along. On my return I went straight down the hill instead of skirting the edge of the field &...

Chysauster submitted by Humbucker on 19th Dec 2017. Stumbled across the signs for the settlement while staying near Penzance & couldn't resist a visit. Only one other family when I visited & when they left I had the place to myself. Very atmospheric.

Hoarstones

Hoarstones submitted by Humbucker on 16th Jan 2018. Visited during December when the grass is much shorter making the circle easier to spot. I followed the paths through the plantation, but a word of warning - it is called a marsh for a reason (the remains of an ancient glacial lake). I found it useful to orientate myself using the gap in the distant trees!

Drift Stones submitted by Humbucker on 6th Feb 2018. The Drift Stones. I had difficulty finding these (small car - high hedge). Eventually out of desperation I asked an elderly lady who was gardening. She said, 'Ooh! I havn't been up there since I was a young girl', & rushed off to find her OS map to show me exactly where they were.

Jubilee Hill barrow submitted by Humbucker on 14th Feb 2018. The barrows on top of Jubilee Hill in The Malverns. The northern one has mostly been destroyed, but you can still see the shape. The southern one is just to the right of the path as it disappears over the horizon. What you'd call a bracing walk in Winter, but worth the effort!
