East Kennett longbarrow submitted by Humbucker : The view from East Kennett Longbarrow - West Kennett Longbarrow in the middle distance to the left of the frame & Silbury Hill to the right. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This huge long mound is slightly longer than its partner at West Kennet, and survives relatively well apart from to the south-east where some of the chamber stones are visible. Unexcavated, the barrow is 105m long and 6m high.

There is no public access unless you are staying at the campsite on the land of the farm where the barrow is situated. However it is clearly visible from the byway that goes uphill to the south of East Kennet village.

East Kennett longbarrow
East Kennett longbarrow submitted by mbalax : I was lucky enough to stay on a campsite on the land of the farm where the barrow is situated, and the owner was very kind and allowed me full access (no shouting!). The downside was that I was there in June with full nettle/bramble cover, so not much barrow access, more looking from the outside - but it's great to look away from the outside to see the rest of the Avebury landscape.

I asked some at the end of the village about a path to this magnificent site and was abruptly told "its private land.... you can't go there totally PRIVATE LAND!!!!"
The guy had Private Land signs all over his garden and might suffer mental health issues.
I was told you can access the barrow along the Church Lane side.
How can something like the great East Kennet Long Barrow belong to such an unpleasant person? Unbelievable

I received permission from the landowner in 2005 to climb up there. It was exciting to visit an unexcavated site and imagine being able to dig into it, but of course I did not. When standing on top I do recall being able to make out the so-called "recumbent goddess" shape of the front end. And I think I may remember some large curb stones on one side.

If you try visiting this site expect to be run off the ground by angry idiot farmers in 4x4 vehicles or horses. They will speed around to to frighten you! They refuse to put up any signs to help to direct you to the byeways and pathways and if you step one foot off anything (which they are hoping you will) they will come out charging for you screaming and shouting. They really need to be reported to the police and charged with antisocial behaviour and given an ASBO because they are very obnoxious indeed - some of the worst ive found in a long time. They seem to thrive on catching people so they can shout at them. My advice, dont take any BS from them and record them on your phone and give the recordings to the police.

Does anyone know how I can try to get a visit to the East Kennet longbarrow? I've yearned to see it for decades and it is now calling me. In the area for solstice...

It was years ago, but I spoke to the farmer who was out in the yard and asked permission. Finding the right farm house might be a challenge, but you could ask around. He had me walk up along the edge of his field.

Maybe it's a different owner now and perhaps they don't realize what a fine neolithic site they have on their property, or perhaps they just don't care.

Why is East Kennett unexcavated? How frustrating for thousands of archaeologists that there has been no opportunity to compare East with West and with the long barrow culture in general. G Holden

Had the good fortune to visit here yesterday (picture to follow). It's a HUGE beast! Much evidence of badger damage sadly, and doubtless the tree roots have added their own damage to whatever may be inside.

Hi. Yes, the barrow is the longest in the UK - 104m long! Thought to possibly be chambered, like its neighbour at West Kennet. At the summer solstice, I observed the sunset directly over the chambers of West Kennet, when viewed from East Kennet long Barrow (images in my book about West Kennet). So the sites are solstice aligned. Wonderful.
Also, Windmill Hill, 'Silbaby' and East Kennet long barrow are aligned, and so too the Palisades Enclosure, Avebury and East Kennet. What wonderful placing of these monuments in the greater landscape, something Stukeley commented on long ago.
    Best wishes, Pete (stoneseeker.net)
