Right beside the road at SX574672 are the remains of a fairly large cairn, about 22 metres in diameter. However, this cairn has been well and truly messed around with, no doubt going to make up the road and the nearby walls. In fact, it is perhaps surprising there is anything left of it at all.
Gutter Tor North Cist is to be found at approximately SX577671. I wasn’t sure exactly where to find this, as it is not clearly marked on any maps, and I nearly gave up looking for it after having wandered around on the bracken covered moorland for quite some time. This area has many lumps and bumps in it, I am not sure whether they are some kind of old settlement remains, a form of old quarrying, or perhaps some kind of craters left after some shelling ? I was thinking of giving up, and stood on a high lump of rock looking for tell tale signs of anything in amongst the bracken, and I saw something to go and investigate only 15 metres away. And yes, this was it.
There are the remains of a 4 metre diameter cairn, with a few kerbstones remaining, in the centre of which is a nice cist. The dimensions of the cist are about 1.4 metres by 0.5 metres, but one of the ends has been pushed in.
This was a nice find, although not easy to locate. And I wasn’t carrying my gps with me, so I can’t give a very good position for it. [now updated, thank you]
Update October 2019: This cairn circle and cist is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entry for the Gutter Tor N. Platform Cairn Circle and Cist, which tells us: "(this is) A cairn with cist and a double circle of stones situated on the north-facing slope of Gutter Tor at about 305m OD. The end-stones and side-stones of the cist are in situ but the coverstone is missing".
The site is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 438610 and as MDV4015 (Cairn in the parish of Sheepstor) on the Devon and Dartmoor HER (PDW notes there is a duplicate record for this site on the Devon and Dartmoor HER - see MDV4045.
The cairn is also scheduled as Historic England List Entry Number 1012473 (Cairn with cist north of Gutter Tor).
