I have switched some of my photographs over to this site page. Beautiful stone, and lovely location.

Part of the magnificent Drizzlecombe complex of southwest Dartmoor, this is a fantastic 3+ metre tall triangular shaped slab standing erect at the downhill end of the Drizzlecombe stone row A, which runs away uphill towards the northeast from it.

The stone is in line with the row, and not across it as a blocker. It's width is about 2 metres wide at the base, just 50 cm at the top, where it is thicker than at the base, 50 cm at the top, about 30 cm at the bottom.

This stone is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 439030, which tells us: "The stone is significant because the area is otherwise stone free and, like a blocking stone, it faces the cairn 280m. to the NE".

This standing stone also features on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks website - see their entry for Drizzlecombe S. Standing Stone.

Drizzlecombe menhir 1
Drizzlecombe menhir 1 submitted by Anne T : The long stone at the south western end of Drizzlecombe One looks very different in profile as you walk around it. It's a tall stone. Butler in volume 3 of his Dartmoor Atlas of Antiquities, page 135, says that the "terminal pillars, all re-erected in 1893 and stabilised with concrete, are massive slabs which must have been hauled some distance".

Drizzlecombe menhir 1
Drizzlecombe menhir 1 submitted by SandyG : The stone row is overlooked by the Giant's Hill enclosed prehistoric settlement. It is this type of survival that makes Dartmoor such a special place. Plenty to ponder and inspire.
