The stone is about 1.5 metres wide at the base, 0.7m at the top, and only 20 to 30 cm thick, except for the rather odd and characterful bulge at the top.
The menhir is thought to have been brought here from Higher Hartor tor, a kilometre away. It is the largest on Dartmoor, and said to be "by far the finest in the west of England". I wouldnt argue with that. It really is a lovely thing.
It has some strange carvings on the northeastern face, possibly chinese symbols, of unknown origin.
This standing stone features on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks website - see their entries for the Drizzlecombe N.E. Standing Stone and the Drizzlecombe Ceremonial Complex (Photos 1)
The stone is also recorded as part of Pastscape Monument No. 438619. The Devon & Dartmoor HER also includes a record; see MDC1478 (Standing stone at Drizzlecombe).
The stone is also scheduled as part of Historic England List ID 1014145 (Three stone alignments, 15 cairns, a cist, a partially enclosed stone hut circle settlement and a small clapper bridge at Drizzle Combe).
For more information about this standing stone and its relationship to its stone row and the rest of the Drizzlecombe Complex, see the Stone Rows of Great Britain's entry for Drizzlecombe 2.
