I have visited· I would like to visit

Anne T visited on 15th May 2019 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Giant's Basin Cist (Drizzlecombe Cist 6): This cist was pointed out to me by Dave Parks and Sandy G, but I only seem to have one photograph of it, although I remember standing over it and taking photos from different angles. Perhaps I've got muddled up with all the other wonderful stone settings and cairns in the area. A brilliant area to visit. So much to see, all in very close proximity.

TheCaptain have visited here

Drizzlecombe Cist 6
Drizzlecombe Cist 6 submitted by thecaptain : Drizzlecombe Cist 6 has a capstone 1.8 m by 1.2 m sitting on top of a broken box, which is now three side set slabs, probably two side slabs and a single end stone. (Vote or comment on this photo)
About halfway between the cairn at the top of stone row 1, and the massive Giant’s Basin cairn can be seen what at first looks like a little pile of large stones. Closer inspection shows this to be a collapsed cist, but with no signs of a surrounding cairn.

There is a capstone 1.8 m by 1.2 m sitting on top of a broken box, which is now three side set slabs, probably two side slabs and a single end stone.

Update July 2019: This cist is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 438623, which calls this 'an alleged cist' as there are some disputes as to its origin/construction (some sources consider it may be a natural feature). It is also recorded as part of the scheduling information for Historic England List ID 1014155. The Devon and Dartmoor HER also includes a record for this cist; see MDV3373 (Cist near Giant's Basin cairn).

This cist is also featured on Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks, Giant's Basin (near) Cist. Butler, in his "Dartmoor Atlas of Antiquities", Volume 3, page 137 adds: "“Twenty four metres to the south of cairn 1 is the Giant’s Basin Cairn, 5 (22x4m) with huge central hollow but still retaining a good bowl shape, and between the two are the probably remains of a cist, 6. A large slab, very likely the capstone, is propped over two uprights in the position of endstones, but the sides have gone as have all traces of the mound”.

Drizzlecombe Cist 6
Drizzlecombe Cist 6 submitted by Anne T : The Giant's Basin Cist (Butler, Drizzlecombe Cist 6), the capstone as seen looking south towards the Giant's Basin cairn. Pastscape 438623 casts doubt about this as a cist, saying: "The small stones are of the wrong size and shape for a cist and though the large stone has a superficial resemblance to a coverstone the setting is unlikely for a cist". Having said that, it is a scheduled ancient monu... (Vote or comment on this photo)
