Fernworthy stone row SE submitted by SandyG on 28th Sep 2014. Tiny stones protruding through the turf make this row difficult to photograph. A useful reminder however that many rows include stones which would have required very little effort to move and raise. This does not detract from their significance although it is perhaps remarkable that they have survived so well for so long.

Log Text: Car parking is available at SX 65948 83908. From here head west on the forestry track to SX 65477 84039. In the clearing on your right are a stone circle, cairns and two stone rows. Fernworthy 2 is situated in this clearing to the SSE of the stone circle.

Log Text: Car parking is available at SX 64577 74591. From here take the bridleway north westward for about 900m. Take the path towards the tall stone at the upper end of the row. The Laughter Tor 2 row is situated very close to the upper end of Laughter Tor 1 row and depending on vegetation conditions may be visible.

At the upper reaches of Butterbrook are a double and a single row of stones, on a similar alignment. The northern single row crosses beyond the end of the double row. The stones are smaller than those of the double row, some hardly showing above the ground, and not easy to see in all the loose natural stone of the area. There is no obvious western end to the row, and the furthest stones here are more or less adjacent to the cairn of the double row...

Log Text: This has never been an easy row to get to. When visited in 2013 car parking was available at SX 62524 61120. Recently (2016) this car parking area has been closed making it much more difficult to access this part of the moor. An alternative car parking location is at SX 64342 59548. From here the easiest way to reach the row is probably to head east to the Two Moors Way at SX 65765 59965. Then follow the track north to SX 64683 63454. From here navigate north west taking care when crossing the River Erme. Given the effort to get to the area it would be a good idea to have a look at the Hook Lake Row and if you have time the splendid one on Stalldown as well as some the amazing prehistoric settlements. Another option maybe to park at SX 60395 70806 and approach the row from the north via Crane Hill. A full day but hopefully a rewarding one. Best contemplated in the summer.

A decent map and reliable GPS will be essential.
