Discoveries‘Adopting-a-Monument’ is one of the ideas proposed in the recent All Party Parliamentary Archaeology Group (APPAG) 38 page report on its vision for archaeology in Britain.The report - in parts - damns the current disorganised state of British archaeology and lists 48 recommendations for change - ten of which it sees as priorities.
The APPAG was formed in July 2001 and contains MPs from all parties as well as many Lords - the group is chaired by Lord Renfrew an archaeology professor at Cambridge University.
At the end of 2001 the group called for witten submission from interested parties on the current state of archaeology in the UK - 267 responses were received and these informed the formulation of the report.
The report covers all areas of British archaeology but of most interest to many Megalithic Portal users is the recognition of the role of the amateur and voluntary sectors in bringing the past to the communities. In this context the report discusses the role of archaeological societies but recognises the need to increase the public’s involvement in all areas of archaeology and the report moots the idea of local ‘adopt-a-monument’ schemes.
For any stones enthusiast the Sites and Monuments Record should be one of the first ports of call for research BUT these crucial databases of information are often totally innacessible. In recognition of this APPAG recommends that SMRs are more accessible and that a single internet portal should be built to allow increased access.
Since the implementation of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act in 1978 there has been a massive loophole in heritage protection law. A system called ‘class consents’ has allowed the legal destruction of some monuments, for example, through ploughing. APPAG recommends that class consents are abolished.
Elsewhere the report covers the roles of Government, quangos and non-governmental bodies, archaeology in education (“Prehistory should be part of all national curricula”) and the pay of professional archaeologists.
The publication of this report is welcomed and it is hoped that Government accepts its recommendations as British archaeology can only benefit form that.
