Hexham's Stan Beckensall was presented with an honorary degree from Newcastle University during a ceremony last Friday. Mr Beckensall, of Leazes Crescent, was given the honour after devoting nearly 40 years to recording the prehistoric rock art of Britain.

In that time, he has done more to raise the international profile of British rock art, especially the rock art of Northumberland, than any other archaeologist. In 2003, Mr Beckensall donated his extensive Northumberland rock art archive to the university, where a website to make this resource available worldwide to specialists and enthusiasts alike is being developed.

He was presented with his degree by the Chancellor of Newcastle University, Christopher Patten. Other recipients of honorary degrees included sculptor and creator of the Angel of the North Antony Gormley, writer and broadcaster Miriam Stoppard, and the founder and former managing director of Sage, Graham Wylie.

Good luck to Stan, He`s had more success than I although my research started only ten years ago. We are still in the dark ages over this issue in our area, they still think "culture" began with the romans, but things hopefully will improve. Arthur, Burbage, Leicestershire.
