StonehengeOn 11th May 2004, the 12 week Public Inquiry into the Highways Agency’s proposals for the A303 road tunnel at Stonehenge ended. The National Trust supports the objective of a tunnel but, at the Public Inquiry, objected to the Highways Agency’s proposals for one of 2.1km length. The Trust presented evidence showing that far from delivering its own declared objectives, the Highways Agency’s proposals would actually compromise them and that this could be avoided by lengthening the tunnel to at least 2.9km.
What happens now?
The Trust, as the owner of much of the land on which the tunnel would be constructed, must now wait for the Secretary of State’s decision on the scheme; that will be made with reference to the Inquiry Inspector’s report and recommendations. The Inspector’s report is expected in the autumn of 2004 and the Government’s decision early in 2005. We will consider our own position once we have studied the Secretary of State's conclusions.
More details about the Trust’s views on the proposals can be found on the Stonehenge section of their website. The site contains links to relevant documents and sites
