The solstice annually attracts an eclectic mix - Druids, hippies, sun worshippers and those simply curious to experience the ancient festival.
The soggy conditions obscured the sunrise, but failed to discourage the biggest turnout in five years. The event was a peaceful one, with just 15 arrests overnight for minor public disorder, a Wiltshire Police spokesman said.
As the sun rose at 0458, a cheer went up from those gathered overnight at the stone circle on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire. Revellers clad in ponchos, black cloaks and makeshift waterproof jackets made from bin-bags, gathered at the Heel stone - a twisted, pockmarked pillar at the edge of the prehistoric monument - to welcome the rising sun.
