An ill--fated attempt to re-enact the building of Stonehenge by transporting a three-ton stone 240 miles by land and sea was finally shelved yesterday.

Insurers said they were no longer prepared to cover the risk of the project, designed to show how Neolithic man transported bluestones from Wales to the stone circle in Wiltshire 4,500 years ago.

The scheme by the Welsh cultural group Menter Preseli and backed by £100,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, joins the Dome and the Millennium Bridge on the scrapheap of millennial mishaps.
