I'm pleased to announce the three winners of the August 2010 photo competition:

Just as a recap, each month all the photos submitted to the Megalithic Portal have a chance to be voted on by you, the visitors. In August there were around 3000 photos submitted so well done for sticking with it!

There is still some time to vote on the September and October competitions and have a browse of the latest photos anytime you like.

Feel free to vote and comment on any that particularly catch your eye, either for visual or archaeological merit. A vote from any person will start off the scoring - also remember that you are allowed to vote for your own photos once if you would like to put them forward.

I'm just so happy to see ANY fotos of your remarkable stone structures.
Feeling my Celtic/Druid roots, but Oregon has nothing, NOTHING like these to relate to on my path. The Celts I know were in New England and up the Mississippi eons ago... but no sign of them on the West Coast of America!
Know of anyone doing informal tours of special spots in the UK?

I totally agree with Martin_L about Hamish's being a [stunning] worthy winner.
This is what I've just posted up on the main competition page:

While I was delighted to read that I'd won a prize in this comp, and also perplexed to think 'which photo' could that have been.. once I realised which one it was I could hardly believe it.
How could that one, which had been cobbled together, and posted just as 'info', come second to someone like Hamish and his fantastic aerial shot of Stonehenge and the Avenue leading to it?!!
This is a good example of why this form of voting won't work. It was obviously an ongoing item with some other regulars over whether it constituted a worthy shot or not because of the 'join' running up the middle, otherwise I doubt it would have had as many votes.
I've told Andy I'm not happy about it being included, as it gives a false reflection of the quality of our work, and someone more deserving should win second prize. (I've not actually looked at the 3rd,...

    Angie, 14 different people voted for it with a score of 9.26 overall, so a lot of 10s in there

    The competition says you can score for archaeological interest as well as pure photo quality so it possibly also scored for doing the composition to get so many stones in shot and shown clearly.

    Similarly with Martin's, 8 votes, 9.88 overall, so almost all 10s. Very informative photo.
    I didn't hype them in there and that's not just us voting.

      Well, Andy, put that way it is very gratifying, but still embarrassing because of the quality. It would be interesting to hear others' *honest* comments on this. The photos after mine were much better in my opinion.

        Well yes perhaps, but they only got 5,6 and 7 votes. We could use 'judges disgression' to choose from the top 10 photos but we didn't think that would be fair when your photo had more than twice the basic score. Let's see what happens in the next competition. No one in August or September knew they were entering a competition at the time but there were so many photos over the summer that it seemed worth going back and having a look.

          Andy, I love her spliced photo too for the reasons you mention, but as a long time professional photographer I agree she's absolutely right:
          When dealing with photographers who stock the site with wonderful photos for free, it would be a sound policy not to highlight images with plain defects without the photographer's permission, as a courtesy to your valued suppliers' reputations, regardless of competition criteria or whether the defected images were fairly elected to some rank. I think you might find that several of your suppliers have good reputations as photographers. If photographers (or any artist) have not entered a contest, one should be truly careful how one proceeds to enter them without their permission if one values their contributions. Certainly the courtesy mentioned above is utterly reasonable and easily implemented. It could never be valid to presume that a photographer would be happy to have defected work pointed out in a worldwide public forum.

            I see, fair point. In future I will check with the photographers of the top 10 scoring photos first to ask that they are happy to be entered into the competition. I was eager to get on and announce the first results as time was getting on. I'll do that for September.

To support the Megalithic Portal i will not make use of the prize.

Thanks to anyone who liked my picture although it was just a regular contribution and not intended to take part in a competition. I greatly appreciate the kind feedback.

And of course: Congrats to Hamish Fenton. Really a worthy winner.

    wow to all the photos by the winners ,

    m nnow on to lanyon quoite i was there on lord falmouths land in 2 thousand failed to take a photo of it the but i dont recall the stone in the for ground as my son and i walked all around the stone laying at the rear was seen but the on raised hedge seemed to be much lower as from the stone at the rear i could see over it has something been changed since then
