Huntingdon Warren Settlement
Huntingdon Warren Settlement submitted by Bladup : Lidar image of Huntingdon Warren Settlement Source: www.lidarfinder.com (Vote or comment on this photo)
Noticed while walking around the southern slopes of Huntingdon Warren (Dartmoor) the settlement faces south with views to the Avon Dam and the junction of the West Walla Brook with the R. Avon to the SE.

In Butler's excellent 'Dartmoor Atlas of Antiquities - Vol. Four, the South', he tells us that:
"The four enclosures of the highest of the Avon settlements developed on the same impressive scale as the largest of those lower down the valley."

His diagram on p.163 shows two larger, fairly oval enclosures (A and B) to the west of the four, and the other much smaller two (C and D) to the east.

I've used the recorded OS grid ref for enclosure B as it is most central.

We did not explore this area, only passing through en route to the clapper bridge and back again to Lud Gate. I believe the photo shows the southern walls of enclosure B, which also has a cairn marked inside it.

I did stop to photograph a cairn while walking west, so it is most likely that one. It is hard to pick out features while walking on this rough terrain, hence not realising that the cairn was inside a large enclosure then.

Butler says that B seems to have no significant buildings within it, other than a possible small hut with a pen attached. A line of small semi-circular banks on the east wall may have been storage areas.

Note: The oblong shapes on the LiDAR are pillow mounds (built in Medieval times for rabbits). Photos of the settlement are on our page

Huntingdon Warren Settlement
Huntingdon Warren Settlement submitted by AngieLake : This one *may* be hut 20 in Butler's plan of the settlement. We were definitely lower down the hill on our way back, when I saw it. Initially I wondered if it was a beehive hut, but Tim Sandles on Legendary Dartmoor, writes this: "I suppose the easiest way to distinguish a beehive hut from a cache is that with a struggle you could have sat in a beehive hut whereas a cache there is no chance u...

Huntingdon Warren Settlement submitted by AngieLake : Another view of the cairn in Enclosure B, this time looking SE towards the Avon Dam reservoir and the coast beyond it. Another large circle of stones (a pound, or an enclosure) is situated on the distant hill, upper left here.

Huntingdon Warren Settlement
Huntingdon Warren Settlement submitted by AngieLake : If I am right, this is the cairn in Enclosure B, on Huntingdon Warren's southern slopes. My son and his dog look SW towards our destination - the clapper bridge down in the valley of the River Avon.

Huntingdon Warren Settlement submitted by AngieLake : This is a scan of Butler's diagram for Huntingdon Warren Settlement. Sorry it's a bit misty, the original was clearer in black and white. (c) Jeremy Butler, Dartmoor Atlas of Antiquities, Vol Four - The South-East.

Huntingdon Warren Settlement
Huntingdon Warren Settlement submitted by AngieLake : The low walls of this large enclosure were noticed while walking back around the south side of Huntingdon Warren. They stretch right across the centre of this photo, and odd stones seem to run downhill from the gap in the southern wall. The largest two of the settlement's four enclosures are labelled A and B in Butler's diagram, and this may well be 'B'. We didn't have time to investigate prope...
