The ramparts are clearly visible in this picture, and the grazing sheep give a sense of scale. The ramparts in the foreground drop away sharply - presumably as the result of a landslip.

One is aligned with true north and the other four with the midwinter and midsummer solstice sunrises and sunsets. In clear conditions at each of these times, the Sun’s full disc shines through an opening in one of the totems, lighting up a central rock of Portland stone."

Stalldon Row submitted by thecaptain on 22nd Sep 2006. The northern end of the row has 4 wonderful large (2 metres plus) stones still standing, which can be seen from miles away all over the southern moor, and look in many ways like walkers on the hilltop.
Seen here looking to the north, the wild moorland stretches off into the distance.

Even if you don't go for any of the cave tours on offer....Creswell is a great place to spend an afternoon.

One of the finest examples of prehistoric rock art in the Peak District. Discovered in 1965 on a large earthfast boulder 25m east of the enclosure , the design consists of a series of cup and ringmarks together with a small spiral and two circles that enclose multiple cupmarks. Reputed to be the highest megalithic tomb in Britain, Five Wells chambered cairn stands on the false crest of a limestone plateau, 427m (1400ft) high on Taddington Moor, overlooking the fertile Wye valley.
