DiscoveriesThe Coedydd ac Ogofau Elwy a Meirchion caves near Denbigh have been named a Site of Special Scientific Interest by the Countryside Council for Wales following a number of interesting palaeolithic discoveries in the area.Finds include a tooth believed to be more than 200,000 years old (possibly one of the oldest human remains ever discovered in Wales). This was unearthed during an archaeological excavation at Pontnewydd Cave, one of the best known caves in the Denbigh area.
The fossil remains of hippopotamus, rhinoceros, bison and straight-tusked elephants have also been found in a number of caves throughout north-east Wales.
