WDA wins responsible developer award

DiscoveriesCountry: Wales The Welsh Development Agency has won a UK award for its responsible development of a site where prehistoric remains were found. The British Archaeological Awards 2004 highly commended the WDA within its Finder's Award, sponsored by Tarmac, after it discovered Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age remains at the site of a business park in Mid Wales and funded a five-week excavation to discover more about the site.The WDA was presented with the award during a ceremony in Belfast. It was made jointly to the agency and its clerk of works, John Williams, who reported the discoveries.
The WDA began developing a new business park at Llandyssul, Ceredigion in 2003. During initial excavations contractors found circles in the ground and the agency called in the local archaeological trust to investigate.
Archaeologists from Cambria Archaeology discovered the remains of a Neolithic settlement, three Bronze Age round barrows and an Iron Age farmstead. A five-week excavation allowed the Trust to discover more about the site's archaeology.
John Thomas, WDA head of construction in Mid Wales said the agency was proud to have been recognised.
"It identifies the agency as a responsible developer and highlights the way developers and archaeologists can work together to ensure historical facts and data can be secured for future generations," he said.
Ken Murphy of Cambria Archaeology, added, "From an archaeological point of view we were very excited to have been involved in this project and grateful to the WDA for providing the opportunity, funding and time for a full and proper excavation to be undertaken.
"A great deal of credit must also go to the contractors who spotted the first traces of archaeological features and alerted us to the site."
The WDA has installed interpretive panels at the site explaining the archaeological find and history of the area.
Dr David Breeze, chairman of the British Archaeological Awards, said, "It is important that archaeologists and developers work closely together. The last thing that archaeologists want to do is to hold up any development."
