This is our new server, a super fast 3GHz dual Xeon which is I hope going to make things a lot smoother than our old setup. I am still testing things out but all looks well. To fill in a bit more of what went on, our old web host went into receivership (something I was not informed about until earlier this week).

The equipment and customers (ie. us) were then bought by to another company, and thanks are due to them for keeping everything running. However they then had to relocate all the equipment from Manchester to London.

Knowing this would cause a long outage, and wanting to do an upgrade anyway - not to mention the risk we might get dropped on the way - I went off at short notice to lease a new server. Many thanks to our new host Alberto for giving us a great value deal and setting it up very quickly. And for lending a temporary server to keep us going while I set up fully. We are still in Manchester too which is good I think.

The bad news is that we had paid for web hosting up until July 2011, so we have lost around £150 which we can't get back. However the uncertainty of being moved to London for 3 months and then having to move again then wasn't something I wanted to do.

So if you've not done so already, perhaps you can show your gratitude for keeping us online through all this difficult period and help fund the new faster server by signing up as a full member.

Some comments and information posted over the last couple of days may have disappeared. I am filling these back in from the old server but may need to get in touch with the people concerned and ask them to repost.

Thanks for your patience. Things are now back to normal so please carry on contributing.
Andy B

Still working on things... Password and status e-mailing is now set up.
Also enabled the database query cache and other tweaks, that should make things even faster

Hi Andy, I registered last week and immediately changed my password to one I use often and can therefore remember. However, it seems that this password did not lodge on the system so I can't login to upload some very interesting photos! I've tried using the 'forgotten password' link several times now but nothing has come through yet - HELP!

Hi, sorry to hear you're having problems.
The site was changed to a new server last week and any data put in during the changeover would have been lost.

You're showing (of course!) as an anonymous poster. What's your username, please, then hopefully we can sort something out.

Photo uploading is now fixed.

What a nightmare. When you upgrade you find they have changed things in the latest versions of the web server software (PHP / Apache / MySQL) and random things stop working - aargh. I think everything is now fixed.

Yes I should really have moved us ages ago but it's such an upheaval to do!

Still at it here. There's an as yet unexplained problem with photo uploading - always the most troublesome bit - but everything else seems fine. Let me know if you see anything 'not right' and I'll investigate.

Maybe us down in the "mysterious forum" have our uses?

Still no news but I have now had more time to prepare a 'plan B' so we shouldn't be off for long.

Anyone trying to upload photos will get an 'upload too big' error as that was the best way I could find to shut off uploading. Normally the limit is 280kB and we should be back accepting photos by the weekend.

Yes we have a reprieve for now but we will still be moving. Hopefully the outage won't be as long as feared.
