I'm very pleased to announce the winners of the December 2010 photo competition, voted for by you. It seems amazing that just a few short months ago we had such deep snow, and this is very much reflected in the winning entries:
1st Prize: Castlerigg by Jan F
2nd Prize: Lanyon Quoit by cazzyjane
3rd Prize: Cerrig Duon stone circle by cerrig

View the photos and more Highly Commended entries below.

1st Prize: Castlerigg by Jan F

2nd Prize: Lanyon Quoit by cazzyjane

3rd Prize: Cerrig Duon stone circle by cerrig

Photos can be scored for visual or archaeological merit or both. Congratulations all, as well as the kudos of having won out of all those photos, you have all won a choice of books from our Online Shop.

Here are some more Highly Commended photos with very good scores to show as well.

Thanks to everyone who entered. Just as a recap, each month all the photos submitted to the Megalithic Portal have a chance to be voted on by you, the visitors.

There is still some time to vote on the February and March competitions and we will be announcing the results of the Jan 2011 competition soon.

Feel free to vote or comment on any photos that particularly catch your eye, either for visual or archaeological merit. A vote from any person will start off the scoring - also remember that you are allowed to vote for your own photos once if you would like to put them forward.

More details on the monthly photo competitions are here.

I think some people have voted after they saw the results - which is fine, of course. When I looked some hours after the winners were announced, both the first and second place had 10 votes and a score of 10.

Rune is right that the voting for each photo is still 'live' after the competition has ended. The general process is:
    1) The public votes and ratings select the top ten photos (as of last week in this case)
    2) I then email the owners of these photos for permission, and to choose which photo they wish to enter if they have more than one in the top 10
    3) Our judges choose the top 3 winners and highly commended from the photos that have been entered. The positions are still closely based on the voting, ie photo number 10 won't get 1st prize, unless the nine above declined to enter

I would also like to say well done to Cerrig and JanF - I feel a bit of a fraud compared to them as I didnt have to wade a long way through deep snow to get my picture, just don my wellies and nip over the wall! My car did skid a bit on the journey down there though!

Couldn't agree more Mike. From my perspective it seems to have been warm and sunny for so long now, and so long ago since there was snow.

    Fantastic pictures all.
