There are other books which will give you information about ancient sites, but I haven't come across one as inspiring and inclusive as this before.
The Old Stones details a huge number of megalithic places to visit all over the UK and Ireland and marks particularly notable ones with stars. If you want a gazetteer and guide it does this with ease and simplicity, being organised by county and area. However, there is more.
There are numerous atmospheric photos taken by a wide variety of contributors, top tens, tips on getting the most from a site, archeological and historical information, esoteric thoughts and OS references... in essence this book is wonderfully inclusive, it embraces multiple viewpoints.
I love the mix of academic and how sites make people feel, the energies, which people who have visited...

What a book this is and what a project to take on. I've spent ages looking through it already and envisage many more hours to come. Put together with careful thought , it's got colour photos [lots], maps, articles, quotes, how to get there and much more. What it is not, more than anything, is dry. I'm no archaeologist or historian, goodness knows, but I do like finding out about things I see in the landscape. I live in Wiltshire, which has more than its fair share of old stones but there are one or two here that I didn't know about. And why so many in Cornwall, Pembrokeshire, Anglesey, Cumbria and the Northern Isles? Geography is a clue but then what about Derbyshire? Questions abound.

What a fabulous book! I really like the way the sites are indexed by region with colour-edged pages, it makes locating them very easy. I turned straight to our local area, between Matlock and Bakewell, and found all the sites had been covered. I thought our local rock-art had been omitted but sure enough it was mentioned in the write-up on a nearby stone circle.
The book came just in time for a weekend exploring part of Dartmoor with a group of ancient site loving Pagans. It proved to be portable, despite the size, and was admired by all. It was passed from person to person in the pub during one evening, with everyone looking at their local area and commenting favourably on the coverage.
I like the occasional comments and articles in boxes scattered among the site details. A lot of hard work has obviously gone into this and it deserves to be THE reference book for sacred sites. It...

I am totally in awe of the effort by all involved to have produced this wonderful book.
I have already put it to good use and chose a site to visit whilst I was in Pembrokeshire recently. The photograph in the book was very appealing. I was telling my friend along the way how sometimes I feel a calling to a specific sight and that there can be great synchronicity or coincidence that leads me to that point. This particular monument wasn't so straight forward to find as it turned out. Not one to give up easily, especially after an hour's drive, I persisted with the search to eventually find entrance to the woodland that it was in. A short while later my friend and I bumped into a lady walking her dogs. We asked where the stones were and she said she was on her way there so we could follow her. To cut a long story short....she was the person who took the photograph of the site in the book! :-)

Just the book I have been waiting for!

I have been waiting for a comprehensive guide to the Stones of Britain and Ireland for years - I've got one that's about 20 years old but it doesn't cover them comprehensively enough or in enough detail (or with enough pictures for my liking but this one is just the ticket!
The book starts with (unsurprisingly) the Introduction to stones, the various periods in which they proliferated, the various types of stones: circles, chambered tombs, dolmens, ccausewayed enclosures, barrows, cairns, houses etc
The main section is divided into the areas of Britain – hence they are The West of England, South of England, Midlands and East England, North of England, Isle of Man, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
Each site has a description of where it is, what it is, map refs, a colour photo etc. There are many places I have already visited and also hundreds I have yet to explore. I...

Comprehensive yes, thought provoking no

This book describes itself as comprehensive and thought provoking. In all honesty if you want thought provoking read Averbury by Evelyn Francis (no friend or relative of mine!). This book never reaches the dizzy heights of stimulating thought but what it does do with a Mark Lewisohnesque attention to detail is gather together all our mainstream science facts about UK stone circles in one book and write about them with the mediocre but scholarly and humorous patter of the professional enthusiast. You're getting superb value for money here so despite my carping it deserves 5.

Insanely comprehensive book

OK, I'll admit it. When I opened this book my first thought was "Oh, wow, what have I gotten myself into now".
I am no stranger to megalithic sites, having visited maybe...20 so far in my life, more or less. My experience is that there's two types of site: those you drive up to, [optionally] pay, go into, see, leave, and those you drive to the vague location of, get lost, spend hours trying to find, leave, never find. So I guess that's what this book is for.
The guy who authors the book runs a site which basically covers the same material so it looks like the material was collated (not simply copied apparently) and made into a book. I hate to imagine how much effort this was, a collaborative effort apparently.
It's a thick wedge of a book, yet also a paperback, so you can carry it in your car or backpack or whatever (if you need that extra kilogram or so!) and use it...

I got this for my husband. We are both fans of Andy Burnhams website, the megalithic portal, and have often wished for a book from the site. This does not disappoint, it is a comprehensive field guide very much up to the high standard of the website. It's well written and researched, although hubby wanted more photos... but that's him! I loved the way it was set out, the photos were excellent and its well priced. A definitive work that stands alongside such work as Julian copes ' the modern antiquarian'. Frankly, a must have for any megalithic fan.

I've been a fan of the website for many years so was looking forward to this. It didn't disappoint.
My only criticism would be that it is too big and heavy to carry around easily so has to be left in the car!

There is a whole academic group for whom this is a societal publication. In other words, a learned group that specialise in megalithic / paleolithic Britain. And what an excellent book ths is. Beautiful bound up and printed, this is a comprehensive guide to ancient Britain, diivided into regions and timelines. Highly recommended. |

If you have more than a little interest in the likes of Stonhenge , Avebury, or standing stones in general THIS BOOK IS A MUST HAVE !!!!
Page after page after page of photo's of pretty much i think EVERY standing stone in Great Britain!!! Region by region , County by county.... just amazing...
Giving accurate location details , accessibility information and where available a little history associated to the photograph...
Having had an interest in the subject for many years, this volume is invaluable!!! I cannot fault it in any way... If I have any criticism, it is a pity there is not a hard bound copy available....
