Shepperton Henge
Shepperton Henge submitted by Andy B : The brilliant display by SPARCS (Spelthorne branch of the Young Archaeologists Club) at the Community Centre, Thames Street (next to Debenham's), Chertsey until the end of May 2005. This display board is tucked in the corner of the coffee shop, where I enjoyed a sandwich. Pictured with one of the friendly clientele of the Community Centre who were most intrigued as to what I was up to! (Vote or comment on this photo)
A new exhibition, examining life in Spelthorne 4,010 years ago is now open. I had to visit this as I work nearby. The display board is tucked in the corner of the Community Centre coffee shop.

SPARCS (the Spelthorne branch of the Young Archaeologists Club) has been working hard since the autumn to create a banner showing views of the local area in the Neolithic period, when the borough was covered in forest.

Remarkably, it features lifelike models and details of three destroyed henges in the surrounding area; Shepperton Henge, Ashford Henge and Staines Enclosure, as well as the Stanwell Cursus. You can navigate to them to see them in close up and read more via the link above.

This fantastic display allowed me to set what must be a new Portal record in photographing three previously unrecorded sites in one lunchtime, and still have time for a quick sandwich! Believe me with the atrocious state of Surrey's remaining prehistory this is as exciting as it gets round here. The display is pictured with one of the friendly clientele who were most intrigued as to what I was up to.

Spelthorne 2005 BC is available to view at the Community Centre, Thames Street, Chertsey, Surrey (next to Debenham's) on weekdays only until the end of May 2005. It's in the downstairs coffee shop, on the left-hand wall.

The Young Archaeologists Club is a national organisation run by the Council for British Archaeology, allowing children, aged eight to 16, with an interest in archaeology to learn more about their past. SPARCS is run with the support of Spelthorne Museum.

Note: Come see the cuddly henges of Chertsey!
