Prehistoric Log Boat is new Museum’s Star Attraction

Discoveries
The boat had spent the last 80 years in the cellars of Manchester Museum before being returned to the town. The wooden boat, which is in remarkably good condition considering its age, would originally have been approximately 14 or 15 feet long. It has yet to be radiocarbon dated, but it is believed to date to either the Neolithic or Bronze Age.
Other items on display include a collared urn found while grave digging in Newbold Astbury graveyard in the 1950s, and a number of bronze tools including a hoard discovered in 1925 when building a local school. Items include two socketed spear heads and a small socketed axe. A bronze age urn discovered during excavation at The Bullstones in the 19th century also resides at the Museum but sadly this was very badly restored in the past and is awaiting conservation.

Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday and Sunday 12-4.30pm, Saturday 10am-4.30pm. There is a small admission charge.
