Neolithic and Bronze Age

<< News >>

Work on part of a new development in Portrush, on the north coast of Ireland, has been temporarily halted after archaeologists unearthed what could be a Bronze Age village.

The excavation at Hopefield Road has revealed double-ringed round houses and a number of prehistoric artefacts.

Malachy Conway, the Portrush excavation director, said: "In only one quarter of a large field we have found a considerable number of double-ringed round houses, as well as prehistoric pottery, flint and stone tools.

"As time goes on this is going to be a very significant find which will generate lots of interest."

He added: "Charcoal and other organic substances have been found, which means that scientific radio-carbon dates can be carried out.

"Judging by the size of these houses I would say they date from 1100-1200BC."

They have also found a rectangular house which is thought to date back to the early Christian period of the 6th-11th centuries.

Mr Conway and his five-strong team of archaeologists have been working on the site for only two weeks, but will have the opportunity to extend their stay as the excavation unfolds.
