National Trust archaeologists have discovered an arc of buried megaliths that once formed part of the great stone circle at Avebury in Wiltshire, it was announced earlier this week. A geophysics survey has revealed that at least 15 stones lie buried within the circle itself.

Originally constructed over 4,500 years ago, the existence of these enormous stones has remained a puzzle for archaeologists for the last three hundred years.

Today’s visitors to Avebury will see most of the standing megaliths in the western half of the stone circle. The famous map of Avebury drawn up by William Stukely in the 1720s showed that many of the stones in the south-east and north-east quadrants of the circle were missing.

Now, the first ever geophysics survey of these areas of Avebury, carried out by the National Trust, has revealed that at least fifteen of the megaliths lie buried in the circle itself. The massive stones show up very clearly as computer images and the National Trust has been able to identify their sizes, the direction in which they are lying and where they fit in the circle.

Martin Papworth, the National Trust’s Archaeologist for Wessex, said; "This is a truly exciting find and completes the circle of Avebury. These stones were erected over 4,500 years ago and the world of archaeology suspected that most of these stones had been demolished and lost forever. We know that many of the Avebury stones still standing up to three hundred years ago were broken up for building stone in the seventeenth and eighteenth century.

"Until now, no-one had realised that some of these stones had survived intact and that they actually lay buried in the earth, next to their original locations. It is quite likely that they have lain there since the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, pushed over and buried there by the local population who may have seen these pagan symbols as a threat to the established church."

In the 1930s, Alexander Keiller excavated and re-erected many of the stones that can be seen today, standing in the west half of the circle. However, the outbreak of WWII brought an end to his project. Now, although the National Trust has no plans to raise the stones that have been so well protected by the earth for around seven hundred years, it is considering using ground probing radar to create 3 dimensional images of each of the buried stones and raise them as computer images.

Re: New Stones discovered at Avebury by Anonymous on Sunday, 27 January 2019
"Nicholas Markwell has kindly produced a summary of the findings
Northern Circle (6 surviving out of 27)
3 standing (stones 201, 206, 209*)
2 fallen (stones 207, 210)
1 buried (stone 225, discovered in 1881)"

I suggest that only the the fallen stones of the Northern circle should be resurrected. That would double the number of stones in that circle. That signifies the lunar sidereal month (27 days) which is next to the slightly larger 29-stone Southern circle (= Moon phase cycle, 29 days). This would help everyone to understand the MEANING of Avebury.

I know this is an old thread, but I am new to the megalithic world and only recently read "Prehistoric Avebury" by Aubry Burl and learned of the buried stones. Absolutely fascinating and I totally agree with those that would love to see all the stones raised! As for the rest of the comments here, I can only paraphrase the great Rick James: "Acid is a hell of a drug!"

We are benefiting hugely for the restoration work done in the 20th century, Avebury is much more attractive and inspiring with its ancient stones up - so come on English Heritage, continue this great work - restore the place... put back up the buried stones.. Janine Roberts

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the web site, I'll definately check it out. Try www.the keys.maharaji.net. It might interest you.
I'm very intrigued to hear what you say about pulling all the stones down. You're the only person to have said this so far - But, actually, it is a hugely valid point. The stone circles throughout Britian did in fact create tremendous problems for the Earth - and, therefore, for all of us. People won't like or believe that, but it's true.
The mercury power centre at St. Michael's Mount did have to be shifted. I did not shift it - How could I? It is the primordial being that has the ability to achieve such things. That is the one who has access to it. The paradox is that, in order to do such things, a human being's help is essential - Believe me, Mike; it's a truly amazing and a wonderful technology: which, incidentally, I still don't fully understand. But then I don't need to.
Where have those forces shifted to? That has to remain a secret - And I'm not being...

Dear Mike,
How very nice to hear from you.
I was beginning to get a little depressed by the responses - Ho hum. One day people will realise that in order to find the correct answers one must throw away the books and all convention and delve deep into the Great Mystery that waits for anyone who really wishes to know.
'The Primordial Serpent O f Wisdom'! Woww. I've never heard it called that before. It's quite true, of course, it actually is the true experience of God. But a person only ever knows that by experiencing itdirectly : no book or philosophy can ever bring that understanding.
Also ' don't forget the stars'. That's very true - The entire vast array of light energies are all absorbed into the Earth.
So! What are your feeling about the 'raising of the stones'?

Re: New Stones discovered at Avebury by Anonymous on Monday, 19 September 2005
Dear Pete G and Thorgrim,
Thankyou for your responses: What is the source from which the construction dates for Avebury originate, and 'how can I know all that?'
Both very good questions.
To answer both of these, maybe the second question should be addressed first...
First of all, what I am about to say bears no relation to any sort of belief system, human concept, visualisation, or imagination. What it does address is an actual, a living, and a tangible fact of life and also of Nature, which can even be personally interacted with.
That source, which I am now referring to, has been called 'The Primordial Being' - This is a fact and not a fake. I know this because I have been face to face with it for a rather timeless twenty minutes, when upon the major power centre of outgoing Mercury force at St. Michael's Mount; during the peak energetic moment of the correct month. (That power centre had to be shifted to a new location, incidentally, due to many people using...

            Hi Andy and Pete,
When I realised that Swastikas were to be outlawed as a result of this country jumping into bed with Europe, I took measures to protect my site in the future. I chose three non EU countries, two with affiliations with the Swastika. Copyright just doesn't exist in two of these countries but, in the third it does, sort of! I am entitled to post pictures of myself and or property of mine regardless of whether I took the piccy or not. And these three countries are not recognised as democracies!!
As for you being a mason Pete, someone at your end has certainly gone to some lengths to have me believe that you are. I find this far more interesting than the original allegation to be honest.
As for you meeting me Pete, you'll have to jog my memory old son, I've met plenty of folk at the stones.

What a wonderful subject. And what excellent ideas form some of the above writers. I am hugely encouraged by the interest and passion that people have for Avebury - and it proves to me, without any doubt, that the many stones that do lie unearthed at this very ancient site will indeed be raised and reinstated.
One more thing...
I am able to discover such details as exact dates for places such as Avebury; therefore, if it could be taken in the spirit of fun and, maybe, even seriousness, I can offer an exact notation of the dates...
The stone circle and ditch were begun in 3, 858BC and completed in 3, 583BC - 275 years to build. By 2021BC the creators of Avebury had disappeared, in a similar fashion to the Mayans: for they did live in a very similar way. Who were they? They were an extremely war-like people, who, in other cultures, have been called the Tuatha De Danaan. These are fiery people who preceded the Celts and who treasured four powerful experiences of cosmic force...

Re: New Stones discovered at Avebury by Anonymous on Monday, 28 June 2004
There is no justification for leaving those stones unexcavated and unseen - it goes right against the grain of everything which has been happening at Avebury since at least the Cunningtons in the early 1900's, a tradition of restoration which also saw West Kennet Long Barrow utterly restored in the mid 1950's (that's two decades after Avebury's entire restoration was interrupted by ww2). The more of the monument we see the more we are going to understand about it and the people who built it, which I thought was the whole point of archaeology, anyway - 'understanding the past'?

From Traveller:

Avebury the complete circle

In the February issue of Living History magazine, I read with interest that Archaeologists working for the National Trust in Avebury have discovered an arc of megaliths that may have belonged to the famous site. They took a geological survey measuring density and found some 15 stones beneath the ground within the circle. Although size and shapes need to be confirmed, they show up clearly as computer images.

Martin Papworth, trust archaeologist for the Wessex region comments, “This is a truly exciting find, and were erected around 4,500 years ago”.

Archaeologists have often been puzzled by the complex since its discovery by John Aubrey 300 years ago. A 1720s map showed many stones in the SE and NE Quadrants were missing. Alexander Keiller, who purchased the site in the 1930s concentrated his efforts in the west half of the circle. Papworth suggests the new stones may have been buried by pious 13th /14th century locals.

The Nati...

The confirmed existence of these buried stones is incredible and exciting news. What to do about them is obviously controversial, ranging from don't touch them to raise them all. I would like to make a suggestion in the spirit of true British compromise. Why not carefully survey them all with remote sensing devices until the maximum amount of information has been extracted and THEN, raise them one at a time, with one stone being raised every 25 years, the first being raised perhaps in 2010. With (at least) 15 stones known to be buried so far the project to raise them all would take at least 375 years. A mere moment in time for this ancient site.

This proposal offers many benefits.

1/ With intervals of 25 years, generations to come will all have a chance to see 2 or perhaps 3 stones raised in their lifetime.

2/ Future advances in technology and archaelogy can be incorporated with each new raising. This also allows a running record of changes in technology and methodology etc....

From The Wiltshire Advertiser 05/12/2003

One megalith may be raised

One of the fallen megaliths at Avebury may be restored to its original place, even though there are no plans to excavate its long-buried brothers.

On Wednesday the Advertiser revealed a survey by National Trust archaeologists has found at least 15 massive stones buried close to where they would have stood in the circle.

Now archaeologist Mike Pitts is applying to reinstate a stone on the eastern side of the circle, which fell over in the 18th century.

Mr Pitts, the editor of British Archaeology Magazine, wants to carry out some excavation around the stone in the hope of revealing tools used to construct the site thousands of years ago.

"The principal reason for wanting to excavate in the stone circle is that we do not know when it was built," he said.

"Our best chance is to find something organic, such as a red deer antler pick, which we can carbon date."

He has been talking to English...

Of course all of the fallen stones should be re-erected. It is nonsense to say that putting them back where they belong would be "of the 21st century" No one is talking about making concrete fantasies of stones that do not exist. The real eye sores are the 20th century concrete blocks!
If all visitors to this site wrote to the National Trust and demanded that the stones be re-erected - something might happen.
