According to a letter in the Guardian today by the Vice-Chancellor of Plymouth university, the Government's new plans to raise tuition fees in universities could lead to the disappearance of courses such as philosophy, ancient history and archaeology.

He comments that these courses "are not seen to have an economic benefit to the country, but which may nonetheless enhance the culture of society".
