An application to extract fluorspar from Watersaw Rake quarry on Longstone Edge in the Peak District has been rejected by the National Park Authority reports the Park’s website.

Glebe Mines wanted permission for a new open cast operation but the Authority's Planning Committee felt the application went against its policies to protect the environment. The Committee were also concerned that the proposal came only two years after the Company's application for larger scale mineral working on Longstone Edge, which did not cover extraction at Watersaw Rake.

Councillor John Bull, Chair of Planning, said, "We feel that the proposal would spoil the character of the area and that there are alternative sources of supply of fluorspar. We also feel that the environmental statement submitted by the company is inadequate.

"What we would like to see now is for the company to finalise the agreement for working the main part of Longstone Edge which would involve giving up an old consent for working granted in the 1950s. This would then help to reduce the negative impact of quarrying on the landscape." 28/04/2003

Quarry company agrees to move

Part of the Derbyshire landscape has been saved from quarrying after a company agreed to give up its rights to work in the area. Glebe Mines has rights to mine for fluorspar in the eastern part of Longstone Edge near Calver.

Despite environmental concerns, the rights lasted for the next 40 years.

But it has now agreed with the Peak District National Park Authority that it will mine a smaller site at Winster Moor instead.

Precise conditions

John Davies from the Peak Park hopes the public will welcome the agreement.

He said: "People have been very much opposed to quarrying on Longstone Edge.
It is a very sensitive site.

"In the case of Winster there has been very little public concern about the
proposed work.

"It is subject to very precise conditions and the land being restored
afterwards."
