<< News >> Men jailed over motorway protest

Four men arrested over a protest at the construction site of the M3 motorway near the Hill of Tara in County Meath have been sent to prison. Three woman were also arrested on Wednesday after scuffles with construction workers at the project. The four were jailed after refusing to accept bail terms which would stop them protesting at the site.

All seven will return to court next week on charges of offensive conduct and breaching the peace.

The project has been bitterly opposed by environmental campaigners.

Environmentalists and historians warned that the Hill of Tara and its ancient burial site in County Meath was too important to be tampered with.

The M3 is set to be built near the existing Enniskillen to Dublin road, which can be gridlocked at peak times.

The National Roads Authority had argued that the motorway was needed because it can currently take up to two hours to travel the 25 miles between Navan and Dublin.

However, some historians objected to its route past an area which they view as a treasure trove of archaeological finds and Ireland's equivalent of the Egyptian Valley of the Dead.

Tara, also known as Temair, was once the ancient seat of power in Ireland - 142 kings are said to have reigned there in prehistoric and historic times.

In ancient Irish religion and mythology Temair was the sacred place of dwelling for the gods, and was the entrance to the otherworld.

Re: Tara petition gathers 12,000 signatures by Anonymous on Tuesday, 24 July 2007
It is not only angering and disappointing but also quite astonishing that Ireland, a country publicly so proud of its history, should so callously destroy an entire landscape which lies at the heart of its cultural heritage. We are used to this kind of vandalism in England but we hope for a greater awareness and sensitivity from our neighbours.

Tara petition gathers 12,000 signatures

An international petition calling for the protection of archaeological sites around the Hill of Tara is due to be presented to the Irish Embassy in Brussels today.

The petition, containing more than 12,000 signatures, has been organised by the Protect Tara International Campaign.

The group says the construction of the M3 motorway in the archaeologically rich Tara valley is an international concern.

Another copy of the petition will also be handed to the European Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas.

Destruction without proper archeological care

The campaign for saving Tara is badly under threat as more 7 demonstrators were arrested yesterday, seeing 4 activists being placed in jail. The bulldozers are flattening everything in sight with absolutely no regard for graves and important archeological structures, no archeological teams are present. This is a pure outrage and something should be done before we lose the wisdom that could be gained from the study of these sites.

please join the campaign now. sign the petition, better still take up arms and head to Tara to help the already outnumbered protestors.

please see the links below for information on how you can help.
