What were the ancients up to? is a question that frequents the lips of archaeologists, antiquarians, scientists and skeptics alike. The enigmatic megalithic culture that graced our planet between 5000 and 3000 years ago, building long barrows, stone rows and stone circles has left little clue to its thinking, lifestyle or teachings.

There are, however, a number of researchers that have begun to unlock the secrets of the builders of the stone circles and related sacred sites. Coming from disciplines as diverse as archaeoastronomy, sacred geometry, ancient metrology, surveying, acoustics and mathematics these top authors will present their research into ancient megalithic sites at the 2007 Glastonbury Conference.

MEGALITHOMANIA is an annual conference held in Glastonbury, now in it's second year. The celebrated 2006 event saw speakers such as Graham Hancock, Andrew Collins, Robin Heath and Nicholas Mann grace the Assembly Rooms stage. Especially welcome was John Michell who coined the 'Megalithomania' name in the 1970's with his beautifully crafted book of the same name. His study of the history and meaning of the megaliths, combined with revealing the effects of the stones on the 'Megalithomaniacs', set the framework for the 'Earth Mysteries' movement of the 1960's and 70's.

Much stone circle research spends years on the fringe of acceptability before becoming mainstream, so Megalithomania is intent on creating a public forum to stretch the debate and challenge the archaeologists and historians that belittle our megalithic ancestors. Hugh Newman, the primary organiser, told us “To suggest the neolithic people were savages with no intelligence is unacceptable today. We want to challenge the status quo around the megalithic sciences.” His co-organiser John Martineau added “The ancients were excellent at astronomy, geometry and surveying, it’s an incredible mystery, why does the media and mainstream archaeology spend so much time dumbing it all down?”.

This Year at the 2007 Conference, to coincide with the re-launch of his classic 'Time Stands Still', keynote speaker Dr. Keith Critchlow will be updating his research into the geometry of the “megalithic artists”. Famous author Robert Temple will be giving us a glimpse through crystal lenses suggesting they could have been part of the megalithic surveyors and astronomers tool kit. Cornish researcher Paul Broadhurst will be focusing on St. George and the mythological relation to earth energies. Professor Ronald Hutton will be tracing the stones through an historical time-line. And to coincide with the republication of his original book Megalithomania, John Michell will be looking at the artists, antiquarians and archaeologists that gave rise to the name of the conference, forty years after the original earth mysteries renaissance.

the 'Gorsedd of Ynys Witrin' (Bardic Chair of Glastonbury) will be hosting their bardic poetry competition at the conference on the Saturday evening. The Chair is contested by open competition annually, always on St. Dunstans Day (May 19th), each contestant performing for up to 15 minutes on a given theme, chosen by the previous Bard. The Bardic Trials take place on the 15th , 17th and the final is on the Saturday evening at the Assembly Rooms, coinciding with Megalithomania. This is by donation only, no set fee (19th May).

The private Stonehenge visit will be on the Friday Evening. A guided tour around Glastonbury will take place on the Monday morning. Field trips are not included in the price.

I am not anonymous, I am Maia of Shaldon. I have just arrived home from the megalithomania conference and it was mega - as the young may say. And yes a bit manic as well.

Every speaker was well prepared and had material to share to inspire us all, even the novice stoner. Not that there were many of those in more ways than one at Glastonbury Assembly Rooms.

From the oldies we had new ideas, better technology and ways to show us their connections/ revelations; the new faces were brimming over with enthusiasm to share their secrets! A refreshing change from 'croppies' I think.

I could barely write fast enough to record the fascinating words of the great Irish researcher Anthony Murphy and the equally speedy historian Ronald Hutton. We were taken by picture and story from Africa to Ireland, the islands of Malta and Lewis, and given a thorough overview of our own UK sites. Chris Street had me thinking I would like to visit London! Now that would be a miracle, I hate cities. We looked at the relatedness of leys, light phenomena, lenses and cats; we considered the stars, planets, solar and lunar cycles. No stone was left unturned? Well actually we megalithomaniacs would not touch one too roughly let alone turn it. Would we???

The issue of Tara in Ireland and the new road through her site was clearly close to all our hearts. My thoughts (and cash) goes with the lads who are keeping that fight going. We thought Swampy's mile was bad down here in Devon, well this development is nothing less than an outrageous tragedy.

The happy 'accident' of the Bardic Finals was just icing on the cake. I loved it all.Thank you all, the organisers, the speakers, the traders and the audience. This conference was a very special event indeed.

Glastonbury's annual stone circle conference, MEGALITHOMANIA, is pleased to announce that the 'Gorsedd of Ynys Witrin' (Bardic Chair of Glastonbury) will be hosting their bardic poetry competition on the Saturday evening. The Chair is contested by open competition annually, always on St. Dunstans Day (May 19th), each contestant performing for up to 15 minutes on a given theme, chosen by the previous Bard. The move to reinstate the Bardic Chairs of Albion has been ongoing for some years now, there being historical evidence of ancient Bardic Chairs (Gorseddau) in many locations throughout Britain.

The Chairs are usually associated with high places, mounds, forts and sacred hills throughout Britain. Few people are yet aware of the Bardic Tradition in England. Of the thirty-one towns believed to have been Arch Druidic centres in ancient times (and therefore also bardic centers), the following have now been revived: Bath, Bristol, Winchester, Avebury, London, Ely, Exeter and now – Glastonbury.

The original bards were from Iron Age poets-mystics who kept the lore and history of their tribes, held high status and fulfilled an important cultural role. They were closely akin to the Druids and many believe that when occupying Romans destroyed, or drove the Druids underground, their knowledge and rites were passed on to the Bardic Order. Some historians believe that much of the passed-on knowledge originated in neolithic times, possibly during the megalithic era where committing knowledge to memory was more important than written languages.

Hugh Newman, the organiser of MEGALITHOMANIA, told us “To have the Bards of Glastonbury join us at the conference is an honour and it will be a welcome treat for the Megalithomania delegates. The revival of this tradition is essential in re-establishing a connection to our ancestors.”

The Bardic Trials take place on the 15th , 17th and the final is on the Saturday evening at the Assembly Rooms, coinciding with Megalithomania. Entrance to the Bardic Trials is by donation.

MEGALITHOMANIA is committed to reminding us of the rich neolithic heritage lurking behind the propaganda of official archaeological history. The extraordinary ingenuity of our ancestors is examined by cutting-edge researchers and famous authors who share the podium to give us a glimpse in to the minds of our distant neolithic kin. Oral traditions were at the very core of this ancient society, so Megalithomania is honoured to be able to support this important and timely bardic revival.
