Mynydd Illtud Standing Stone 1 submitted by cerrig : Looking South East, towards the Central Beacons. The Mountain Centre can be seen, a couple of hundred yards away in the trees, just to the left of the top of the stones. This is the venue for this years Megalithic Portal event. Part of the Festival of British Archaeology, 31st July 2010 from 10.30am to 5.30pm. Use the Megalithic Portal to discover prehistoric sites near you, and visit some wonderful locations near Brecon. Talks, displays and demonstrations in the throughout the day.

The main presentations will be in the Visitor Centre from 2pm including illustrated talks about megalithic sites locally and around the world. Free entry! Regrettably Andy Burnham was unable but the event went on thanks to the dedication of the joint organiser Peter Boyle and our other volunteers. Simon Charlesworth (Sem) had a fascinating talk about local standing stones (see comment below) in the afternoon.

Cardiff Astronomical Society were also be at the Visitor Centre with solar telescopes (weather permitting!) to allow you to view the sun safely.

We want to encourage individuals and families to visit, appreciate and photograph many of the sites we have listed but that are missing images or other details, in other words to change as many sites as possible from green to red on our maps.

Bring along your photos and information to help us fill out our database. We will be based at the Brecon Beacons Visitor Centre all day with maps and lists of interesting sites to find and report back on.

The Mountain Centre not only has wonderful views to Pen y Fan, it is well placed to visit many local hillforts, standing stones and other sites of interest - some of which can be easily reached on foot from the Centre itself.

Full itinerary of the day and further updates to be posted. If you cannot get to Brecon you can still get involved by going online and checking your own local sites by postcode or grid reference.

Re: Timing of the talks for Saturday afternoon by Andy B on Friday, 30 July 2010

Unfortunately I will be unable to attend as my wife is still in hospital having taken a turn for the worse a couple of days ago. She has been in over two weeks and it hit her really badly. If it was not so far for me to drive I would make an appearance but at 3.5 hours each way (not including holiday traffic) a short visit is still going to be a marathon and I'm exhasted too to be honest.

I'm pleased to say the event is going on thanks to the dedication of the joint organiser Peter Boyle and our other volunteers. Simon Charlesworth (Sem) has a fascinating talk about local standing stones in the afternoon.

Please still come along, and te volunteers could really do with some help if you have any free time, it is a chance to meet up with other enthusiasts from all over the area.

Apologies again but this seemed a better approach than cancelling or postponing as you can still get out exploring the countryside on the day and we will still have our 'base' in the visitor centre and you can still use my number above for texts and calls.

Timing of the talks for Saturday afternoon:

2pm Megaliths around the world (illustrated talk) - Andy Burnham
- Illustrated talk showing some of the most fascinating and unusual prehistoric sites from all over the world - how widespread they are and some of the similarities and differences (if it is practical we will get Andy on the phone as we have his slides to project live)

3pm Sacred Stones, Secret Signs - Simon Charlesworth
- Illustrated talk on standing stones in Wales and their possible use

4pm Megaliths around the world - Andy Burnham
- Repeat of 2pm talk if it is practical we will get Andy on the phone as we have his slides to project live (see above)

All Talks are well illustrated with photos via electronic projection and have plenty of time for questions

Don't miss the maps! I called in to Brecon Library yesterday to check how much space etc there was available for AndyB for 31st, and was shown the old map drawers....worth a visit just to see them!

Some 1887 editions, a mixture of 1:2500 (that's right, no '0' missing) and 1:500 scale. I gather there are some tithe maps available too, but didn't have a chance to look then.

I suppose, if there aren't many visitors wanting to view the Portal on 1st July, I can console myself looking at these gems...

A review of my last talk, from Nik (via Facebook), coming up in Brecon too:

A good talk with passion, I was only familiar with uk stones, south west mostly. but i did enjoy the greater range that over the world, which you showed. Andy really did enjoy your chat, would love to see you speak again ?? Nik

This is the astronomical society I belong to. Thanks for posting this. Hopefully it'll be a nice sunny day. Unfortunatly I wont be along to this event as I work on Sundays but if any on the portal do go along you'll find a lot of friendly people some of which have a fascination with megaliths.

Pity you won't be able to make it. We chose that day because PAB knew the Astronomical Society was there and we thought would be good to double up.

It's getting the time off work and getting a lift. I can try as it would be good to meet up with people on the portal. If I can sort something out I'll let you know.
