The Megalithic Portal is 10 years old this month and we will be holding several events this year to celebrate our 10th birthday. We are planning a big event in Derbyshire, more news very soon and keep the 30th of July free if you'd like to come. However our first event is an ancient site hunt in Berkshire, centered to the south of Reading, where we will be trying to track down as many obscure sites as as possible, then turning the sites from green to red on our maps by adding photos and other information.

You are very welcome to join us, SolarMegalith and myself are organising and we hope to have other members of the Portal admin team and regulars as well.

See the linked photo to the Holden's Firs barrow cemetary that SolarMegalith has already tracked down and you'll get an idea of some of the beautiful countryside in the area.

A provisional itinerary is to meet in the morning in Reading (for example near Madejski Stadium, to avoid traffic in the centre of the city) and visit Ufton Nervet bell barrow, Borson Barrows and the Aldermaston enclosure.

There will be time for a brief look at the Calleva Roman and iron age town (Silchester) although being very well researched this is not the focus of our trip. Then we plan to head to the East and visit Finchampstead barrows and a bell barrow near Hornley Common. This is very much a provisional plan and we are open to other ideas of ancient sites to visit, or to have 'splinter groups' who may like to go off and do their own thing, and meet up later on.

We plan to end our day with a 10th anniversary drink and meal (self funded!) in a country pub in the NW Hampshire area. We could possibly hire a minibus if there is enough interest from people without transport or arriving by train.

If you would like to join us, please e-mail Andy Burnham at [email protected] for further details and feel free to leave a note below. Contact closer to the event and on the day will be by Text or Tel to 07910 900298

Great technological leaders of M4 corridor still in the dark ages over HER access by Andy B on Tuesday, 08 March 2011

Unfortunately, unlike Surrey or Hampshire's excellent offerings, Berkshire don't have their HER / SMR searchable online so that's not much use to us:

You can consult the SMR during our Open House sessions, which take place at our office on the third floor of Reading Central Library on Thursdays between 12 noon and 4pm, or contact us to make an appointment.

West Berks have an online enquiry form that I've not tried.
