Part of the Festival of British Archaeology, Sun 25th July 2010, from 10am to 5.30pm
Our aim is to change as many sites as possible from green to red on our maps by adding photos and other information. Unfortunately Andy will not be able to go to Kent and organise this event due to family illness.

Essentially the plan is to try and find sites that are shown in green on our maps, photograph and post photos so we can document their condition and what is still there.

The Megalithic Portal gives access to information about all types of ancient locations, with helpful details about their condition and access, as well as giving you a chance to contribute your own photos and information. We want to encourage individuals and families to visit, appreciate and photograph many of the sites we have listed but that are missing images or other details.

If you cannot get to join us you can still get involved by going online and checking your own local sites by postcode or grid reference. Click on the Kent link above to see sites in the area.

Unfortunately my wife is still stuck in hospital trying to recover from a recent illness. She is getting better but I will have to give this Sunday's event in Kent a miss in order to concentrate on being able to run our event in Wales next Saturday. Please carry on without me as this is an activity you can do in any spare time you have with the information we have available on our web site.

The gist of it is to use our extensive site database to find interesting locations to visit. We're trying to focus on ones that no one has sent photos or descriptions for and there are loads of these in North Kent.

Choose a broad area and put the postcode or OS map reference into our search box (press Enter) Town and village names are also worth trying.

Or you can go to our main page for Kent and browse from there.

step through all the sites.) You can also narrow the search down by
choosing types of site you're interested in.

Click on one of the green or red icons on the map, then click on the little link that pops up. That will take you to the page for the site
('site page' as we call it)

Once there you will see what information we already have, an OS map and nearby sites in the area that you can navigate in the same way.

On the site page there are lots of coloured square icons, these all lead to maps, aerial photos and other information. As well as the well known Streetmap and Multimap, it's worth looking at the "Magic Map" which has large scale maps with lots of detail and "Old Maps" may have useful information too.

Once you are logged in to the Portal, click on 'Your Own Page' in the left menu, then Select Theme, then choose 'Mobile' theme. This gets rid of the side bars so is better for printing pages and viewing on mobile devices. Of course if you have one of these then you can take the Portal with you. The alternative is to print the most promising looking pages, which gets you the list of Nearby sites too.

On the ground a GPS is useful (even cheap car sat navs can be programmed to location by longitude and latitude so it's worth making a note of some of these).

and download all the sites in each county in a KML or CSV (Excel Spreadsheet) file. There are online tools to convert these formats to Waypoint files for use with all manner of satnavs.

See what you can find on the ground and most of all, take some photos.
If you're sure you have the right location, photos are useful even if there's nothing prehistoric to see.

I haven't visted these sites so I can't really guide you other than to help you find them yourself.

I'm not sure which sites I'm going to visit on the day at the moment but for a group meet up we could meet at lunchtime, or an early evening get together at a pub somewhere and compare notes as to how we got on, I'm open to suggestions!
