<< News >> MP's fury over Stonehenge funding

A former Transport and Heritage minister is calling for Stonehenge to be removed from the list of World Heritage sites. Salisbury's Conservative MP Robert Key says a failure to deliver long overdue improvements means Stonehenge no longer deserves the listing.

He claims money for improvements is being diverted to the Olympics.

He is writing to the UNESCO committee asking for the British government to be called to account.

"Robert Key has been Conservative Member of Parliament for Salisbury since June 1983" - his website.
And what has he done for Stonehenge in the last 24 years? Did he protest about the disgraceful behaviour of the police at the "Battle of the Bean Field"?
I think he should resign now in protest of his incompetence.

I have to say I agree with an MP (and a Tory one at that) for a change. The government want the kudos of a World Heritage site but don't want to spend money on it. As Robinson says they want it on the cheap.

My opinion of New Labour is that they hate the countryside, rural people and their way of life and especially anything old. They want New Labour, [New] Britain and [New] Motorways covering up everything else.

The solution is simple lose the road or dig the tunnel.

As for obligations towards World Heritage sites, I quote (my emphasis)

Inclusion in the World Heritage List is essentially honorific and leaves the existing rights and obligations of owners, occupiers and planning authorities unaffected. A prerequisite for World Heritage Site status is, nevertheless, the existence of effective legal protection and the establishment or firm prospect of management plans agreed with site owners to ensure each site’s conservation and presentation.

I live in Shrewton, that is just past Stonehenge, it means that I have to catch the bus from Salisbury that all of the Stonehenge visitors take, the MP's ought to catch it and listen to the remarks that the tourists make about stonehenge, they all feel let down and disgusted with the site, like me many wonder why in this day and age the stones haven't been stood back up or placed in their proper position's, stones will break down quicker once left on the ground, I feel disgusted when I have to listen to the comments that they make upon their return journey. Can't someone put the "Stone's" back to their former glory?

While I agree with his main thrust about the parlous state of the situation, I think he's going about this the wrong way.

The Govt plainly don't care much about the UNESCO status - in fact they have, I believe, no actual obligation to 'do' anything with a world heritage site (though I'd love to be corrected on this).

Ruth Kelly giving permission to English Heritage to go ahead with their new visitor centre at Countess roundabout, while retaining the planning condition that it can only proceed when the published plan for the A303 is in train, is smoke and mirrors and moves things no further forward. EH appealed to her to give them permission to go ahead *without* the A303 condition, and effectively she turned them down - though it's been well spun by EH in their press releases.

There are a couple of TV download links on the page below which I think relate to this and the 'New 7 Wonders' business
