Archaeologists have uncovered an Iron Age settlement near Cheltenham. The dig, at Deans Farm, Bishops Cleeve, has revealed two round houses, two burial sites and a large number of animal bones. Experts from Birmingham believe it was the site of a farming community in 500 BC which continued through Roman occupation and beyond.



The area, said to be the size of four football pitches, will eventually become a new housing estate.

Team leader Kevin Coles said: "Effectively, we've got a prehistoric settlement site, starting off from the mid Iron Age progressing through to the invasion of the Romans, 43 AD.

"We're finding a large amount of animal bones so that suggests what these people were eating.

"We've got also got dating evidence in terms of pottery."

The finds are being bagged and sent off for further analysis. Once the team has finished its investigations, Bovis Homes will begin developing the site.

Idly browsing your website I came across this 'blast from the past' - for a bit of fun I thought I would try to see what had happened in the last six years -

First a small correction albeit important Bishop's Cleeve and Cheltenham are in Gloucestershire NOT Essex as your title suggests -

There have been some interesting developments and for more detail you could do no more than read an Archaeological Evaluation by Cotswold Archaeology published in 2010 which can be found as an adobe pdf document at hhtp.//archaeologydataservice.ac.uk -

Dean Farm is an area to the NW of Bishop's Cleeve under constant threat of greenfield development for housing. It is also frequently the subject of flash floods.

The whole area seems to be keeping the Gloucestershire County Council Archaeological Department quite fully occupied. Close by to the East can be found the Cotswold Scarp with such beauties as Cleeve Cloud, Cleeve Cross Dyke, Cleeve Ring (Settlement) and the famous Nottingham Hill.
