Chester Amphitheatre
Chester Amphitheatre submitted by TimPrevett : A composite of the Amphitheatre from Newgate, during the dig summer 2004. (Vote or comment on this photo)
The first summer of a three-summer dig at Chester Roman Amphitheatre has yielded possible evidence of an Iron Age settlement. Pollen samples taken from the bottom, pre-Roman layer at the amphitheatre have included cereal pollen, giving indications of arable farming.

Confirmation of an Iron Age settlement at this location would be an exciting insight into this area usually dominated by Roman and post-Roman archaeology.

More information, with many pictures, webcam, diagrams and photos of the Chester Amphitheatre Project can be viewed on their website.

Further information about Iron Age Cheshire can be found in the recently published book Prehistoric Cheshire by Vicky and Paul Morgan.

Note: The third summer of digging has finished at Chester Amphitheatre. A pdf newsletter details further investigation into Iron Age postholes and other pre-Roman archaeology found during the summer; see the link in the most recent comment.

Mesolithic Evidence in Chester by TimPrevett on Saturday, 23 July 2005

A mesolithic microlith has been found at the Chester Amphitheatre Dig; a good picture is here
http://www.chester.gov.uk/amphitheatre/finds.htm
and page down a little

Many other non-prehistoric finds also shown. Fascinating stuff.

So, are we to assume then, that human activity and settlement has been happening at Chester firmly into prehistory? Looks like it.

Ooh, it's exciting.

Goodnight

Tim

There is an exhibition happening at the visitor centre, well worth a visit; see HERE for more.

Also, the Chester Amphitheatre dig will be the subject of a BBC2 Timewatch programme in March 2005.

Cheers, Tim.
